    Type 1: Eye test

My optician gave me a grilling about my HBA1c result once after asking me what they were. It was a good HBA1c result and she made out it was dreadful so clearly didnt have a clue but I was also wondering why she felt the need to comment on anything other than my 'routine eye test'. LOL!

Such a bad start to the day!

This is a very good point. Kinda related in a way but I have had adrenaline rushes (for example when I was knocked off my motorbike) in the past that have shared exactly the same symptoms with a hypo and when I have checked, my sugars have been between 8 and 9 mmo/l.

Such a bad start to the day!

It always feels really awkward though, how do you actually tell someone when you are in that position without looking strange and feeling uncomfortable?

    Hypo Stories

This probably (or definitely) has been done before but lets do it again since I cannot find the post. I want to know inconvenient/awkward/annoying/seriously bad/funny/typical stories of your hypos. I always love reading them as sometimes it feels like it is just me who has hypos at annoying...

Such a bad start to the day!

Hypos are the absolute worst for creeping up at the worst times. I feel your pain there. I often have hypos before leaving work which means I have to sit in my car for 30 / 40 mins before I can drive. Such annoyance!! Well done for getting the job though, imagine what you could do if you were...

    Snack Before Exercise

When I have been to the gym in the past to just use weights, I do not find I really need to take anything at all or adjust any insulin because I don't use enough energy. If I am doing intense cardio (IE cycling for a few hours), I will not eat anything before because I will get a spike in sugar...

    High Altitude and Type 1

Very interested in hearing the results if you could kindly post when you have been. Something I have never thought of but I see how it is actually a concern. Have a good one pal, it is great to see that the Diabetes is not stopping you from living an active and interesting life!!!

    Finally figured it out!

Ok, so I have been on Lantus and Humalog for some time now, possibly coming up to 5 years. Even though it was much better than my previous insulin regime (mixtard or whatever it is called now), I was having constant lows and highs at specific times of the day despite sussing out my carb counting...

    Car insurance and Type 1

@victoria21 You should go with Direct Line. They do not discriminate people with illnesses, I was not even asked if I had an illness or a restricted license. I tried all types of price comparison sites and they all came up with medical conditions and when I did the same quote without my...

    Hypos

Yes!!! I hate the anxiety which surrounds a hypo, especially when youre out socialising or are at work. When im hypo I cant think straight and even talk to myself inside my head, tis very weird and scary. Youre not alone :')

    Best meter?

Im currently using a contour next which i got for free from Diabetes UK. Its the best meter out there in my opinion. Its got a USB which allows you to connect it to the computer and it links to software which shows all of your readings and loads of cool graphs of your bloods over a certain time...

Bolus for a three course meal

Personally I wouldnt bolus until after the whole meal. This is frowned upon by my doctor who advises doing it before meals but ive never had an issue with injecting after a meal and this can be backed up with blood readings. Im not a big fan of having a hypo in social situations so taking it...

I think I took my Lantus twice...

Always best to keep checking sugars hourly if you think youve doubled up on Lantus as it can be pretty risky although not a MASSIVE danger. I have done this before and have monitored sugars instead of taking bolus and adding a little bolus if sugars go high. Quite a scary thing first time you do...

    Work and appointments

    Yea probably :)

    Work and appointments

Some places do offer evening appointments though. My GP is a diabetic specialist who runs a weekly evening diabetic clinic. Trouble is he is not allowed to give me a pump. There would be no harm in a hospital running an evening clinic once a week or even month. Not everyone can get time off work...

    Pump Frustration

I appreciate what you are saying Gaz and I really wish I could but I have spent years getting to this point in my career and the way things are going in education, staff are easily dispencible and I have a family to provide for so I dont want to pee work off. Its not really a big issue as in...

Just signed up for a half marathon!

Personally what I would do is grab some of those hypo gels. Very easy to take when exercising (I use em for running and cycling). I find dextrose tablets to dry and make me choke. I tend to eat something every 30 mins when cycling and around every 45 mins when running. For me, a few jelly babies...

    Hypo after eating

Are you on 'Novomix' by any chance? Sounds like you are on insulin that mixes long and short acting insulin together. Id say speak with your Diabetic specialist and ask to be put on Basal-Bolus. It allows you to get much more accurate control as you can adjust short acting insulin depending on...
