    Success of low carb

I was diagnosed 18 months ago. My Hb1ac was 103 and I was put on metformin and vildagliptin. Today, it is 42 and my doctor has taken me off vildagliptin. He says if I can keep to below 50, I can stay off it. He also says that this could not have been achieved without hard work. I have lost a lot...

    Type 2 panic!

I was diagnosed in April with Type 2, very high numbers. Lifestyle changes and medication have improved things significantly. My first HbA1c in August was 45 as opposed to 103 in April. My own tests show numbers between 5 and 7. But I've just had a week of family celebrations in hotels and have...

    help! low blood sugar episode

I was diagnosed Type 2 in April, with Hba1c of 102. I was put on Metformin and Gliclazide, improved my diet, walked every day and got down to 45 last week. But today it all went wrong. I started to feel very shaky and not at all well. Blood sugar was 3.8 so I took a couple of glucose tablets and...

    Whoo hoo!

I was diagnosed 3 months ago with a blood sugar reading of 25.3. My first Hba1c was 102. I am on Metformin and Vildagliptin. My diet was very healthy in quality - I just ate too much of it. I did quite a lot of hill walking, but irregularly. I now walk 10,000 steps a day and have started jogging...

Discrimination - what can I do?

I can't advise about the hospital issue but my IBS improved dramatically when I went on a low FODMAPs diet. This is usually done with a referral to a dietician. It's quite a complicated diet but worth it - my attacks were very severe, I used to be doubled up with pain and had severe bloating...

    Exercise and blood sugars

I had a spike of 10.2 earlier this morning - too much carbohydrate yesterday I think. I went for a brisk 1.5 mile walk (lots of it uphill) and tested as soon as I got home and it was 5.9.

Big question - statins or not

I had to come off statins because they were damaging my liver.

    Blood sugars still high

I had toast for breakfast and 2 hours later my reading was over 13. I have my answer! I have an eye appointment soon and once my eyes are back to normal I will start my daily walks again. I used to do 3 miles every day, quite hilly so will start that again.

    Blood sugars still high

Wow! Had a low carb lunch of cheese and spinach omelette. 3 hours later I am 5.2! I've never been less than 8 before.

    Blood sugars still high

I usually exercise well for my age, mainly walking but quite long distances in places like Dartmoor. Lately not at all because the diabetes is playing havoc with my vision.

    Blood sugars still high

My BMI is 26 and I am 62. My doctor says the gliclazide is temporary and he will prescribe something else as well as the Metformin when I see him next week.

    Blood sugars still high

I have recently been diagnosed with Type 2. A month ago my blood sugar was 25. I was put on gliclazide and then metformin on a gradually increasing dose. My readings on wakings have never been less than 8 and after meals anywhere between 10 and 14. I feel quite depressed - am I expecting...

    Low Fibre diet for IBS

Wheat was the first thing I cut out. My stomach reduced in size enormously within a few days. We now use spelt flour for baking bread and I have no problems with that.

    Low Fibre diet for IBS

I've been on a low FODMAP diet for over a year now and it has almost eliminated what were debilitating IBS attacks. I didn't know about the vitamin D thing though.

    blurred vision

I was diagnosed about 10 days ago with Type 2. Blood sugar then was 25. Now on gliclazide and metformin. My vision is very blurred and I already have an appointment for a diabetic eye screening. Will the blurring improve once my blood sugars go down?

    Another newbie

Mike, I was the same with wheat bread but I am fine with spelt. My husband now bakes all our bread with that. Now of course I have to have a re-think.

Here is a link to the low FODMAP diet http://www.med.monash.edu/cecs/gastro/fodmap/ I am fine with some groups - I can tolerate lactose for example and am OK with onions in small doses. Main things that give me problems are wheat, beans and pulses, garlic, apples, pears and stone fruit...

Hi Mike - like you, just diagnosed with Type 2 and also am IBS sufferer. My IBS symptoms were very severe and a couple of years ago I went on a low FODMAP diet which has worked brilliantly. My attacks are much reduced and much milder than they used to be. My GP has suggested a low carb diet...

Newly diagnosed and in a panic

Just seen my own GP who has been much more reassuring than the idiot I saw last week. He has confirmed Type 2 and put me on Metformin on staged dose. I have to go on a structured programme for diet and he has suggested a low carb diet and given me info on GI stuff. He even suggested this site.
