    Moving To Canada

I live in Calgary Alberta but have insurance through my employer that covers 100% of the prescription cost with the exception of the disbursement fee. Will your partner have benefits with his job? Typically they will include spouse or common-law partners. Alberta Health care will cover...

    Where to inject ...

I have a tiger striped belly from my pregnancy over 16 years ago... I use the stretch marks as guidelines for my injection rotation. I start on one side on my belly and inject the the next one is a couple stretch marks over. There is maybe a centimeter or less between the stretch marks. I...

Advised to reuse lances? Is that right?

In the first few months I changed each time... that got tedious and I started slacking so now I change each time I open a new set of strips.

Who is troubled by injecting in public? Just me?

I have completed the survey. I have no problems injecting in public around friends and family but will go to almost any length to avoid it in business lunches!

    50 Years Later ......

My grandmother kept asking me when I was going to get off "the insulin" like it was some strange drug I was shooting for fun! It is interesting what non-ds think.

When The Penny Dropped For You?

I am in Canada. When I was diagnosed 2 years ago the diabetic educator told me to apply for the disability tax credit. Read the form about how insulin is a life sustaining treatment and covered under it, had my family doctor fill out the forms with support from the diabetic clinic and sent...

What age were you diagnosed Type 1?

I was 38. Diagnosed almost 2 years ago. They went back and forth between Type 1 and Type 2 because of my age. Endocrinologist confirmed Type 1 on March 18th.

    Doctor issues

I test between 5 - 8 times a day depending on what I am doing. That does NOT account for hypo tests which I seem to only be having every 3 - 3 weeks. I would definitely talk to your DSN.

    Family reaction

A great question and interesting to see all the different responses. I was diagnosed at 38 so a bit different for how my family reacted to it. My mother took lots of convincing that Type 1 and Type 2 are different and that there is no way I will get off of insulin. Just saw her a couple of...

    How often do people inject?

I inject once daily for long-acting and 3 - 5 times a day for meals/snacks depending on what I am eating. My last A1C in May was 6.1% with very few hypos (maybe one every 2 - 3 weeks).

Feeling guilty - had a binge

It is ok to treat yourself, especially on your son's birthday! I still think that my kids birthdays should be for me, not them!

Feedback Request - My Dario Meter

Hi all, I currently use the Freestyle InsuLinx and definitely have no complaints it however I have been looking at the my Dario meter just because it would be nice to have "less" to carry around. I am in Canada so the InsuLinx is set up to make insulin recommendations based upon the blood sugar...

    Carb Counting

Hi Tpaz! I'm in Canada also (Calgary, Alberta). I subtract the fibre from the carbs for my bolus. The biggest thing I'm still tweaking and fiddling with is the glucose index and the high fat combination... aka the pizza effect! If I was to take a full bolus for pizza I would go low because...

Type 1s: What stupid things have people said to you?

I had a friend recently comment that I was lucky to have diabetes, that it helped control how much I ate and counted carbs.... this is because I don't like to do big injections so keep my carbs low and if/when I have a treat I always stop and ask myself if it is worth the injection. And I...

Is MDI the right way to treat newly diagnosed T1 diabetes given the current educational model?

Excellent post and great discussion. I live in Canada and was diagnosed as Type 1 early last year. My family doctor sent me to the Emergency Room believing me to be Type 1, there I had a great endo who would have admitted me in a heartbeat had I even issued one word of "not feeling well". I...

Thoughts and worries on my new condition

I remember when I was first diagnosed last year in March (at 38 years old) reading everything I could and processing all the information and coming to some sort of balance with it. The advice here is fabulous and even though I am in Canada, this is the forum I follow religiously even though I...

    Injecting while at work.

I have felt both ways, the wanting to hide and the, bite me, I don't want to do this, I have to do this, attitude. If you don't want to "fight the battle" then have you talked to your boss/manager to see if there is another room (office, storage room, etc) that you could use for your injections...

when to take levemir (slow acting)

I take my levemir at 10:30 pm or so and while it doesn't last 24 hours, it is only off by about 3-4 hours. I wake at 630. If I do my blood before getting out of bed I am normally between 6-7 mmol but if I shower and get ready and then test (about 45 mins from wake to testing) I will be...
