5 things any newly diagnosed type 1 should know

I am a 21 years type 1 man. Aged quite old at 78. I cannot get rid of my snacking regime. I have acquired a Freestyle Type ?2 sensor and it bleeps so much; mainly [1] - when I am out on my one hour bike ride, and {2] It bleeps almost immediately whereas the insulin takes maybe 30 minutes to...

use quick and slow or just slow?

I have the answer folks. My brother is not "just" on a slow-acting insulin but Insulatard, which is a mixed intermediate-acting insulin. Thank you for your inputs. Brian

use quick and slow or just slow?

My younger [second of three brothers; I am the eldest] brother is Type 1 for over 20 years. He eats the same food at the same time every day. I don't think he snacks [I do, lots]. He just injects slow insulin once a day. He has very good HbA1C figures. He does no exercise. I shall check back...

use quick and slow or just slow?

my brother is 72, has been Type 1 for 25 years and has good HbA1C control. He ONLY injects slow insulin. I am 75 and been Type 1 for 21 years. I have to do the "normal" daily quick and slow insulin injections and my control is not as good as my brother's. Any ideas why please? It would be good...

    Question for Tresiba users

If I miss [rarely] my 7pm dose of slow Tresiba of 24 units, my quick bg numbers shoot up until I inject a much smaller Tresiba at say 2pm. NB can anyone explain why my brother has better A1C control than me, as he ONLY injects Tresiba daily - no quick at all?

a super idea, well done Bill Baker. Could this idea be extended to other bodily fluids eg saliva or has this already been tied?

    Worried about Brexit, anyone else?

As the NHS is setting up several committees, as no doubt is our dependable government, I shudder to think what they are going to do, or recommend. With these august bodies being so large and bureaucratic I fear for the near future supplies of insulin and wish there were a decisive leader to cut...

    Should I strive for a basal to bolus ratio of 40 / 60 ?

well call me strange but my basal=bolus ratio is about 2:1! One injection of Tresiba basal when I wake up [28 units] and then sporadic little bits of Humalog that total up to about 14 each day. Anyone else react like this please?. Whilst I am on air, my glucose sugars are going rather high in...

    Gluten rash?!

Hi there. I have had DH for 12 years. If I smuggle in illegal food alongside normal food my rash is very mild. The rash always appears in the same places. Not had to use Dermovate for several years now. Good luck. A shame that much g-f food is expensive.

What does open and closed loop mean - I am not a pump user.

    three auto conditions

Occasionally I forget to check my bgm. If I eat "illegal" food, so long as it is a minor transgression, then my rash does not blow up much at all. I can sometimes "hide it" by eating near other legal food. I have to toast most g-f bread to make it palatable. NB re my T1, exercise seems nowadays...

How do folk cope with having 3 auto-immune conditions/ Mine are T1D, underactive thyroid and dermatitis herpetiformis.

    Pre work out snacks??

By "minimal" do you mean "HALF" what your normal dose would be to cover your lovely muesli-based "snack?" I assume most of it would be slow-acting and - good - very low on carbs.

    three auto-immune conditions

Good news Jo B; welcome to the Triumvirate! Does anyone know how a sweet-toothed man like me can eat low carbs [my daily average carb intake is 200gs!].

    three auto-immune conditions

fine words Tony. My evening meal has always been at 7.30pm and I ALWAYS have a pudding, or TWO, so I know what to do. Easier said than.... I do plenty of exercise, which helps, despite exercise having a dual effect.

    three auto-immune conditions

thank you Tony. My worst part of a day is waking up - when my bgm number is 50% of the time high ie over 12. My son and I ring each at 10pm every night, but always disagree on what to inject [or eat]. My thyroid condition is well-controlled - I THINK. I actually don't know! My rash on DH/coelaic...

Forgive my ignorance but does the closed loop involve an insulin pump and much expense? Plus much faffing and admin?

    three auto-immune conditions

Hello 3 AICs. How do you all cope handling three AI conditions simultaneously? Mine are T1D, underactive thyroid and DH -a close relative of Coeliac disease.I just about manage. My main T1D area is waking up with high BGM numbers.

    Insulin to carb ratio

I am the opposite! My morning ratio is 1:7, it gets longer as the day progresses. Any body else like me? Am I in a big minority?

How many crabs a day do you consume?

You should worry! I punch the air with glee if my daily carbs total is below 200! My wife loves potatoes [3 types every dinner} and I eat toast and have a wretched sweet tooth. My H1Abc is around 7.4 so could be worse I suppose.
