    Slow wound healing woes

Hi Colin, Ouchie. I do hope they’re swabbing any muck and giving you any antibiotics you may need. Mine has healed up but seems to have tracked to the left as pus is coming out of the hair follicles. Ultrasound for me on Wednesday and looks like I’ll have to have that drained under anaesthetic...

Bariatric Surgery for T2's - Gastric Bypass

I never really got many side effects taking metformin. As they said to me at the time of Surgery the RnY is a tool to assist. You’ll find that after a year or so you’re able to eat more than post Surgery.

Bariatric Surgery for T2's - Gastric Bypass

I’m also on high doses of different vitamins rather than popping a multivitamin every day. I take vit b, b12, c, d, zinc and some others. I never had issues with lack of iron mainly due to the huge individual doses. As you know you malabsorb after the op so taking the higher doses means at least...

Bariatric Surgery for T2's - Gastric Bypass

I still take liquid metformin as the huge glucophage ones made me sick. Also when I was post op I used to even vomit up the crushed pills as you really have to crush them well so they’re like dust. Some pills you can’t crush.

Re your meds post op: even though some aren’t available as liquids a good chemist can arrange for them to be made into liquid.

The subs are expensive but I suppose you’re paying for piece of mind. The medical USB I got has an engraving on the back and you just update the info on it periodically

    Medical alert

I used to have a Medic Alert dog tag but the yearly subscription increased to about £30 and I ended up cancelling. I have since carried information in my wallet about my medication/diabetes and also ordered a USB stick which carries all my medical problems/meds on it. Sometimes, IMHO, companies...

Bariatric Surgery for T2's - Gastric Bypass

Hopefully you can stop your meds. In my case my diabetes got worse post-op. I must be one of the few where this happened and wondered if I was a misdiagnosed type 1.

Bariatric Surgery for T2's - Gastric Bypass

I’m just restarting my WLS journey and my GP is supportive. Just need a re-referral to my local WLS dept.

Bariatric Surgery for T2's - Gastric Bypass

I don’t really want to go into the content of the counselling. But back then they had to make sure (tick boxes) that you knew the implications of Surgery. Also back then funding didn’t include post-Surgery counselling. Things may have changed now. Yes I came off all (except the diabetic meds)...

Bariatric Surgery for T2's - Gastric Bypass

I think so too. In my case I was on very expensive and complicated medication. Factoring that in with the price of a hospital appointment (numerous different specialists in my case) I was probably close to bankrupting my local CCG back then!

Bariatric Surgery for T2's - Gastric Bypass

In my case, I chose to be referred. I had to go through some form of “counselling” and weight loss through conventional methods. That was back in 2006. I had to wait 2 years for Surgery. It also depends on the local CCG and funding too.

Bariatric Surgery for T2's - Gastric Bypass

Also, the other thing to consider in this debate is the cost of Surgery vs the cost the patient currently is to the NHS. Back when I had surgery it was about £12k and I was costing the NHS about £900 a month in prescribed medication, appointments with specialists and alike. Therefore it was more...

Bariatric Surgery for T2's - Gastric Bypass

There is plenty of clinical research out there in the public forum for and against Bariatric Surgery. Of course Bariatric Surgery is for people who are obese who also have other issues too. Each CCG has different criteria for patients who want this and have to meet this criteria. For me I had to...

Bariatric Surgery for T2's - Gastric Bypass

I lost weight rapidly and didn’t have gall bladder problems. Some people have problems post-op and some people don’t. It’s like Any Surgery really.

Bariatric Surgery for T2's - Gastric Bypass

To have Bariatric Surgery funded on the Nhs you have to jump thru hoops which includes everything you’ve mentioned. Unless you’re in a similar position to those who need this surgery it’s difficult to resonate.

Presumably from complicated medical problems. I don’t think @ickihun needs to justify her decision. It’s hard enough to decide to have surgery at the best of times.
