    Type 2 Medical School Training

Hi everybody! It's a long time since I've been around, but I have a serious question to ask: Can anyone tell me how much training in Type 2 is included in a medical degree? I have been self-managing brilliantly for 5 years now, with strips when I needed them and all sorts of help and...

    Channel 4

There's a programme on Channel 4 tonight (31 July) at 8.00pm about 6 women trying different diets to "attempt to put their illnesses into remission". Type 2 diabetes in this case. It's called "Extreme Diet Wards: a Food Hospital Special". Might be worth watching. Viv 8)

    A Carbohydrate Experiment

What with one thing and another (weather, cold and greed being 3 of them!) I ended up after Christmas with more carbohydrates in my diet than usual - up to 150g per day rather than 50g or below. As I couldn't seem to discipline myself back into my Atkins-type ways, I decided to use the period...

    Richard III

As a nationalistic Yorkshirewoman and a fan of Richard III, I am concerned that he should not be re-buried in Leicester, but should be brought "home" to Yorkshire. Sad, isn't it? There's a petition about it - would anyone who feels like I do please sign it...

    The 5:2 fast

Some of you may remember Dr Michael Mosely raising the subject of the 5:2 intermittent fasting diet in one of his diet/exercise programmes on the BBC last summer. I think the much-missed Defren tried it. I get my Radio Times on a Friday and faithfully read it through from cover to cover...

    Latest Annual Review

Had my blood tests etc on the 13th Dec - nicely timed to allow a little indulgence (or over-indulgence!) over Christmas. In the month preceding my visit to the nurse I've had an infected toe, a course of antibiotics, then a cold which refused to go away, and about 3 weeks when I had too many...

    Simvastatin caution

My local GP practice have announced, in our monthly local Newsletter, that they are changing all patients currently on 40mg or more ( ) of Simvastatin, over to Atorvastatin because of the side effects. Just thought I'd share that with you all :D Viv 8)

    Viv's latest test results

Just got my print-out from the surgery and I'm really quite impressed, if I do say it myself! Latest HbA1c is 5.5, as opposed to 5.6 last time. It should have been lower, but I've been eating too many strawberries and cream, and I've also found I can tolerate a few more carbs than before, so...

    Leg cramps & Metformin?

At about 03:30 this morning I was idly thinking about leg/foot cramps while hopping about the bedroom on one leg  . I was diagnosed Type 2 in April 2010 (when very stressed) with an HbA1c of 6.5 and a fasting BG of 9.0. I started testing in December 2010 and the highest reading I have...

    Latest Blood Tests

I promised you my latest blood test results, so here they are: Plasma fasting: 5.6. was 5.0 last time. 4.8 2 hours earlier! Good old DP! HbA1c - 5.6. Exactly the same as last time. Cholesterol: Total 5.5 as last time trigs 1 down from 1.1 HDL 1.2...

    Those Who Can't Exercise

The thread about the BBC2 new series The Men Who Made Us Fat triggered these thoughts, but I decided to post them here 'cos I didn't want to send the discussion off on a tangent. Noblehead posted: I'm not sure the quote is exact but something along those lines. Now I'm not offended and...

    Re-using Test Strip Pots

I know many of you don't get test strips so may not know what I'm talking about - but these are solid little plastic pots, about 100mm high and 45mm in diameter, with a hinged lid. They have a label on which is usually very easy to peel off, and when they are empty they sit there saying "Please...

    File on 4 Feb 21/26

BBC Radio 4's programme File on 4 are investigating NHS diabetes care on Tuesday 21 February at 8.00pm, repeated on Sunday 26 February at 5.00pm (usually). Why does it cost so much, and why is it responsible for 24,000 deaths per year. If you go on to the File on 4 web page on...

    Trying a Slimfast diet

I've been reading all the posts about the Newcastle Study Diet, and I've found it fascinating. Because I had reached a weak point in my usual Atkins-based way of eating (the "tomorrow will do" syndrome - and tomorrow never comes!) I decided to try a calorie-restricted diet myself to see what...

    Strategies for Christmas

I hate to raise this topic now - far too early! - but a few of the newbies amongst us have mentioned the festivities and wondered how they will cope. I thought it might be worthwhile for some of the more experienced members to note down a few of their coping mechanisms to help the less...

    Food Programme, Radio 4

Did anyone else catch this at 12:30 today, Sunday? A very interesting discussion about calories and weight loss on The Food Programme. It's on again at 16:00 tomorrow (Monday 24th), BBC Radio 4. Or I assume it's available via BBC I-player. It pleased me because of one speaker whose emphasis...

Researching a cure for Type 2?

i was half-listening to the midnight news on Radio 4 last night, and distinctly heard the newsreader say something about 'latest results getting close to a cure for Type 2 diabetes', or similar. Absolutely no other details! Can anyone help? or am I imagining thing? I definitely wasn't asleep -...

Test strips - lobby your MP

Please find below the text of an email I have just sent to Paul Burstow (LibDem), the Minister for Health with responsibility for diabetes: You can find an email contact for every UK Member of Parliament at the website parliament.uk. I've also sent this to You & Yours, Woman's Hour and Today...

    Private messages

When I went to my User Control Panel to look at a new PM, there was a note saying that a PM had been removed because of content - or something similar. Is this usual? I didn't realise that Admin either did or could monitor our private messages. Viv 8)

    Avatars

Not sure that this is the right place to ask this, but why have those of us who prefer not to have avatars, or who don't know how to do them, had avatars inflicted upon us? I am neither a laughing zebra not a 3-legged rhinoceros, and don't really appreciate being burdened with either, however...
