    High sugars after Covid

Hello, I have type 1 diabetes for 5 decades but after getting Covid in March this year, I have found my sugar levels going high pretty much most of the time. Has anyone else experienced this? I generally count carbs and don’t eat a lot. The other strange thing is that my thyroid levels have also...

    Self-treated DKA; Now complications

Hi Daemoncar, as you probably know, DKA isnt a good condition to get into, but I have a friend who is a long term type 1 who gets acid reflex fairly regularly and she has informed me that it is partly connected to her diabetes. This is the only experience I have on this matter. I have only...

    Back in the day!!!!!!!!

When I saw the insulin 'gun' and the blue through to orange colour chart for clinitest, I got a lump in my throat as I remember feeling so bad when it turned orange, which in the 70s, was quite often. I wish I had kept my insulin gun, I didnt use it, but it looks like a medieval torture...

    Autoimmune Issues with Type 1

Hi, I have type 1 (50 years now) and also extensive vitiligo and hypothyroidism. I sometime also get low levels of cortisol so am regularly tested for Addisons but have not been low enough for medication. I am always juggling diets but really now try to aim for low carb foods so that bg remains...

One word to describe the moment before your first ever pin prick test

Horror.................my first 'pricking' was with a scalpel blade stabbed into my thumb in 1970 on the childrens ward. My mum couldn't believe how barbaric it was. Fortunately the pricking device came later.

    Insulin Shortages Advice Needed!

Recently, in the last couple of weeks, I have been unable to get medicines from several pharmacies. Last week I visited 7 different pharmacies in different areas and am still waiting to see if the items can be supplied from different pharmacies. Some medicines seem to be running out...

Type 1: What are your HbA1c test results?

Hi, just been told that my H test shows I have poor uncontrolled diabetes! The result was 6.9 and it was higher last time. Really confused! I think the GP who made the comment didnt know I am a brittle Type 1 and have been for 48 years. Is that a poor reading?

Has anyone else seen this 'Appalling' type 2 diabetes advert?

I find this advert offensive because it doesnt distinguish between the different types of diabetes and the often hidden reasons why people get diabetes. A few bits of chocolate does not mean someone will get either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. It makes my blood boil because the ad is so...

Hi, I saw my diabetes consultant yesterday and she mentioned a new basal insulin that lasts for around 3 days, beginning with the letter D. I wanted to read up on it as she wants me to try it. Can anyone help?

Type 1s: What stupid things have people said to you?

People have said the following over the years....... ''Oh, its reversible you know, if you diet.'' ''Have you learnt to eat properly since your childhood when you got Type 1'' ''I get that sometimes!'' ? ''You wont be able to have children.'' and at an interview at the BBC in 1981 for training...

    Sugar Tax

Im not in favour of the sugar tax, I often need 2 sips of Lucozade to get rid of a hypo, mind you, a few pence on top of a bottle doesnt bother me. Sugar in water doesn't do the trick because it could be too far to walk to the kitchen, and then it has to dissolve. Fruit juice doesn't work...

What test was used for your diagnosis?

My father took me to see my local GP with a specimen of urine. I was eight years old and a clinitest was carried out which turned bright orange, which meant I had sugar in my urine. I was immediately sent to hospital and put on 2 hourly shots of (then) beef insulin and measured amounts of...

    Side effects of sleep deprivation...

I often have sleep problems and have noticed a raise in BS in the morning when I don't sleep well. I have been prescribed AMITRIPTYLINE tablets which have helped me considerably. I have not associated sleep problems with my diabetes before reading this thread and it made me recall the lack of...

    Doctors letter for overseas travel?

I have taken a letter from my GP who stated and signed my medication. My recent GP did this for free but in the past I have been charged around £21. I always carry my tester kit and insulin pen with me in my bag. Had no problem so far but have been asked whether I have any sharp objects on me...

What does a cure mean for you?

I would love it if a proper cure could be developed during my lifetime. It would mean no more hypos as well as high sugars and the foreboding they bring. I rarely go out by myself away from where I live because feeling I feel insecure regarding bad hypos. I am very brittle and am very...
