How do you manage a 14 hour fast when on insulin?

I'm not sure why but they used to ask for 12 hour fasting and now say 14! If I only reduced my insulin by 2 units before evening meal I'd still struggle. Will just keep carbs very low. Skipping breakfast is not a problem until after the test.

How do you manage a 14 hour fast when on insulin?

Hi Andy They're not sure but have labelled me type 2. It's hereditory in my family and I managed to control it with diet and metformin for a few years after being diagnosed in pregnancy. My doctor didn't really know what to tell me when I asked her how I was suposed to fast! In the end she...

How do you manage a 14 hour fast when on insulin?

I have my annual diabetes review in a few weeks so need to get my bloods done and this is the second year running since I have been on insulin and I remember last year I had to abandon my first attempt at fasting because of a hypo. I think in the end I just had to forego using insulin with my...

Thanks Hana, thats really interesting. I do find it quite complex trying to figure these things out. I am type 2 but on insulin. I'm pretty good at getting my doses right with the number of set meals I eat regularly but trying new things often throws a spanner in the works  Thanks for...

Confused about sugar free Halls cough sweets

Hi Looking at the carb contents on a packet of sugar free Halls cough sweets I bought today it says carbs 97.1g (Of which Sugars 0.0g) I've read many times that it's the carb content you need to look at not the 'of which sugars' Does this mean they will send my BS sky high? Cheers Meg

Very worried and need some advise please

Hi Jo125 I was also diagnosed in pregnancy (28 weeks) but was put on insulin within 24 hours. Was very scarey at the time but soon got the hang of it and as I could see my BS stablising I started to feel I was making progress and protecting my baby at the same time. I was likely already T2...

Where do you buy your testing strips from?

I also am lucky in that I have never been refused them on prescription. Having said that I've recently gone onto Insulin and am trying out various regimes so if they did stop me I'd be pretty annoyed :x My practice has also made me change meters to the Agamatrix Wavesense Jazz Meter & strips...

    New(ish) to Insulin

I find my post breakfast reading is always the hardest to get right. if I have 11 units I can usually keep it around 6-7 but if I have 10 it can go up to 14! Also like you, you get it right one day and then the next it's different even with the same food and units. I seem OK after lunch and...

Hi Oldgent Out of interest what kind of things do you eat? I pretty much stick too wholemeal bread and never more than two slices per meal. also wholewheat pasta, brown rice etc. And in general I try to keep my carb portions fairly small (certainly much smaller than I used too) It's...

Hi I was on this but not anymore. Do you need to loose much weight? My consultant took me off it after saying it should be prescribed only for people with a BMI of 30 or above. Mine was 17. No side affects for me but I don't think it helped much either. Good Luck

    New(ish) to Insulin

Hi I'm in a similar situation but having smaller units than you. The decision to put mew on insulin was due to me having to be very restrictive and controled with my diet to keep my BS at a reasonable 6-8 after meals whe I was taking SR Metformin and Stigliptin for a few years after being...

What is your GP/DN HBA1c target

My doctor told me that my HbA1C was excellent at 6.2% however I was on a pretty restrictive low carb diet on metformin and sitagliptin at the time and loosing far too much weight (BMI 0f 17) She obviously thought I was being obsesive as I told her I kept to a low carb diet and was told 'I needed...

I had my annual retinopathy test on 17th Aug and have had sore, slightly itchy eyes since. The first few days after I had a headache and dull pain behind my eyes but I put this down to the weather which was very heavy and my husband also complained of a similar thing. Then they became sore and a...

Thanks for the replies. I'm still struggling abit with the situation. I have told my diabetes care team who seem happy to address the problem at my next meeting with my consultant on 17th Sept. They said I may need a slower release form of insulin. I'm not doing too badly at keeping my levels OK...

Hi I'm a type 2(ish) who is currently being reviwed by consultants due to loosing too much weight trying to keep my BS levels good (which I did) on the medication I was on (SR metformin and Sitagliptin). This was the medication my doctor prescribed me about three years ago and after some...

    Sitagliptin

Hi I noticed there's some mention of Sitigliptin and weight loss or at least 'no weight gain' whilst on this drug. I was on it for two years and have recently been taken off it (with little affect to my BS levels I might add) after being told only people with a BMI of over 30 should be on it...
