    some questions about metformin

To cut a long story short... Diagnosed as T2 with Hb1ac of 52 in August 2011. Lost weight and moderate carb diet brought it down to 37 within 3 months and I was able to keep it in that range for about 6 years. Even a GTT came back as normal. However over the past couple of years I lost control...

    metformin and itching

I've been taking 2 x 500mg of metformin daily for about 2 months. Fortunately this has not caused the explosive reaction that some people get, in fact the total opposite. However, since i started taking it i have developed itchy armpits. There is nothing visible on the skin, just a mild, almost...

    HbA1c Guidelines

Have the guidelines for HbA1c levels changed in recent years? When I was last on these forums about 3 years ago I am sure the upper level for "normal" was 39. However according to this it is 42. http://www.diabetes.co.uk/what-is-hba1c.html Has it changed or is my memory failing?

    Pain and blood sugar levels

I know that stress can have a negative effect on blood sugar levels, but what about pain?. I've had quite severe pain from my neck all weekend after some osteopathy treatment. Not particularly stressed about it, in fact I used it as an excuse just to sit quietly and read a good book. However my...

    Should I eat it??

Cooked myself a chicken pie yesterday evening. Had a small slice of it for my tea. Was intending to have some more for my lunch but forgot to put it in the fridge overnight. It is actually quite cold in my kitchen overnight but it was out of the fridge for about 12 hours. Is it still safe to eat it.

Stress and diabetes - how does it work

There seems to be a general consensus that stress can raise blood sugar levels, but does anyone know how this actually happens. Does the body create more glucose via the liver when we are stressed, or is it that our insulin response becomes less effective. I had a strange episode a while back...

    Very odd reading.

I have pretty good control of my glucose levels (in fact according to my GTT last year I'm not actually diabetic), so I don't test continually. Haven't tested over the summer so I thought I'd start for a few days just to keep an eye on things, tonight I've had a very odd reading. Monday:- 2...

Glucose Tolerance Test - Results are in

As posted last week, I had a GTT , using my Accu check meter to provide real time updates on my progress. According to my measurements I was 5.3 at the start, 11.6 at 1 hour, and 8.1 after two hours. The official results are back and I was 5.1 at the start and 7.4 after two hours. So based on...

    "live"from the pathology department

I'm having a GTT at the moment. I've now got a couple of hours of sitting around with nothing to do, so with the aid of my meter and smartphone I thought I'd provide live updates of my progress. Waking level 4.8 immediately prior to drink 5.3 I've had the drink and i'll let you know my first...

    Having a GTT

As I mentioned in a previous post I am having a GTT this week. I am planning to take my meter with me so I can check my levels myself during the test. However, I vaguely remember reading something about differing glucose levels in blood drawn from a vein in your arm and blood drawn at your...

My blood sugar response to cortisone injections

As I mentioned in a previous post, I had two spinal cortisone injections last Tuesday. It has been suggested that these can raise the blood sugar levels in diabetics, and I can certainly confirm this. The evening before the injections my reading two hours after supper was 5.3. The following...

    Pleasant Surprise

I've been glucose intolerent for several years and was diagnosed as type 2 in July last year with an HbIac of 7.2. There was some question as to whether a period of severe stress had contributed to this high score and so it was decided that I would not start on medication and would see what a...

    c peptide test

I recently had a C peptide test, the results of which came back perfectly normal. However, I was only able to fast for 9 hours previous rather than the 12 hours that the surgery requested. Will this have made any difference to the result?

    Removing excess glucose via kidneys

How much blood glucose can be removed via the kidneys, and how quickly can this happen. I ask this question as I am trying to understand how my somewhat tardy and irratic insulin response works. A couple of months ago when my blood sugars were higher than they are now, I had a supper of fish and...

    Blood sugar and surgery

I had a small exploretory op last Friday, basically a cystoscopy of my kidney to better examine a large cyst that appears to have formed on it. It was done as a day case but with a general anaesthetic and intravenous anti biotics. I expected a bit of a rise in my blood glucose levels, but...

    A glass of port

It seems to be an established fact that red wine can lower blood glucose levels, but is the same true of a glass of port, being a much sweeter tasting tipple.(please please please may the answer be yes :) )

    Different finger - different result

I use an Accu Check Mobile to monitor my glucose levels. I have noticed that I can get different results from tests done at the same time on different fingers. Just did my pre bedtime reading - the third finger on my left hand gave a reading of 5.9, and the forth finger 6.5. Is this an accurate...
