    Frank discussions Poll

I am so disappointed. I was diagnosed T2 in Feb this year. My first port of call was DiabetesUK and all the nonsense about eating cereal for breakfast etc. When I found by testing that this was sending my BG's high, I then found this site. From the info I gathered on here I then researched...

Type 1 working on a cruise ship?

I know that a type 2 can hold an ENG 1. I only think it is a problem if they are insulin dependent. It may be possible on case by case basis for a type 1 - suggest that you contact your local ENG1 registered doctor and speak to them. these links may help...

Type 1 diabetic trying to become a commercial diver

Hi The information you need can be found here on page 19. http://www.hse.gov.uk/diving/ma1.pdf It would appear to be difficult but not impossible for you to be allowed to start diving training. I would also recommend this website for a lot useful info on commercial diving in general...

Running v Cycling - The Blood Glucose Experiment

Very interesting stuff. I would tend to agree with borofergie though, from what I understand you do not absolutely need carbs. Also, I am not absolutely agree with you regarding what you consider a BG LOW and a BG HYPO. As a non diabetic will typically have a BG level of around 4.0 mmoL, I am...

    The Hairy Dieters

I low carb and still thicken my homemade gravy with plain flour. I only use about 2 heaped teaspoons full which is only about 6g-7g of flour in a pan. Even if I ate half the pan, which I don't, then I cannot see how 3g of flour can make any difference.

Truely private & confidential GP consultation

Jago - if you have any more questions, just ask or you can PM me through my profile. I know a fair bit about Offshore/MN certification and if I can't answer I will know where to look.

Truely private & confidential GP consultation

On another point, nothing is noted on my Offshore Medical certificate. I do not see any real need to tell your employer if you don't want to. If you have an issue that does not put yourself or anyone else at risk why would you need to?

Truely private & confidential GP consultation

I wouldn't worry about getting your medical. I assume you are talking about a Merchant Navy ENG1 or an Offshore Medical? Type 2 diabetes controlled by diet and/or Metaformin will not prevent you getting either medical. My Type 2 diabetes was diagnosed while getting my Medical, once I had...

    Cereals

I would forget All Bran, it has loads of sugar in it. [urlhttp://www.kelloggs.co.uk/products/allbran/cereal/all_bran_.aspx][/url] I think your best bet would be rough porridge oats, the less refined the better.

A very small portion of starch..

I have been following a low carb diet for 5 months or so now. I typically eat <70g of carb per day, sometimes <50g. In that time I have not had ANY potato, bread, pasta etc. I have lost and loads of weight and my BGs are very good. For last couple of days, I have started having a tiny amount...

    Weekend blood glucose spikes

That seems quite a spike. What is it after 2 hours? If it is still high, >8.0mmoL, then it may be worth while getting a Glucose Tolerance Test done. You could be sitting at the "pre-diabetic" levels. If your GP isn't interested then you can always get one done privately, I paid about £50. I...

Newcastle diet - Would this protein drink be suitable?

I am considering starting the Newcastle diet. Since diagnosis in February I have dropped from from 17st to 14st, this has been achieved by a switch to a low carb diet. I have noticed a marked improvement in my insulin resistance and have a fasting blood sugar of between 5 - 6 mmoL. At the moment...

Does your resolve ever fail you?

I seem to have been quite lucky. I was diagnosed in February, since then I have stopped all sweet things, chocolate etc - and all starchy carbs - bread, rice, pasta, potato etc. I drastically cut down on beer intake although I still drink far too much wine! I never ate a lol of biscuits and...

    I just had chips.........

Probably not as low carb as swede but thin slices of parsnip make good chip "replacements". I have deep fried them mind, so not low fat!

    Drinking Alcohol

The hypos caused by too much exercise and not enough fuel are not dangerous 99.9% of the time. Anyone can hypo. A hypo caused by diabetic drugs are a completely different ball game and can be life threatening.

    Drinking Alcohol

Catherine, I am getting rather confused by what appears to be conflicting advice. That article clearly states that "metformin does not cause hypos" and the advice on the site is generally aimed at insulin users. I cannot see how I can be legally required to test my blood before driving when...

    Drinking Alcohol

Grazer - So being diabetic doesn't increase your chances of having a "hypo"? I was of the understanding that if you are a non-medicated diabetic there is no significant risk from hypoglycaemia, apart from the same risk that anybody exercising on in-sufficient fuel may suffer? What you call...

Carbs and the GI - "total" insulin loading

This might be a question for the chemists out there? Certainly for someone smarter than me! I am now aware of the glycemic index and how it effects the speed of the release of carbohydrate into the bloodstream, the amount of insulin released and your blood glucose levels. The question I have...

Study says Low-Carb best for fat loss and vascular health

Re: Study says Low-Carb best for fat loss and vascular healt It interesting that this study hasn't made the headlines like the "Red meat can kill you" of a few weeks ago. I think in a few years the low carb revolution will win through and you will not get strange looks from people when you...

    Carbohydrate or sugars ?

Trying to keep it simple. How can it be dangerous for a t2 to consider that all the carb in food will turn to glucose eventually? After all, the percentage of indigestible fibre in food is generally a very small part of it's make up. So if you ignore the fibre content then the number of grams...
