    Scared to death

I'm not even sure it's that. They simply follow the rule book: diabetes?, the computer says this is what you are having.

Newly diagnosed, up and down like a yo-yo

Hi there, what strikes me is that you seem to think a rise and fall is somehow unusual or not normal. It is normal so trying to 'correct' it is a futile exercise unless of course it is way out of range or 2 one minute and 15 the next.. We have all been through the same when first diagnosed, we...

    Evening meals

Hi there, what you need are a few 'one pot' ideas! Pick a variety of vegetables, I like peppers and onions but any will do and you can adapt for any carb counting you may be doing. Stick them in a large oven dish, salt, pepper, oil and any other herb or spice you like. Add your meat or fish, all...

Did my GP lie to me..?

I agree with you, it's not just a 'label' as if that doesn't matter, it's about knowing what health condition you have. Matters not whether the treatment is the 'same' or not, what I would need to know is will I die without insulin or can I manage it with diet or in some other way. If we are...

Found a solution to my foot-on-the-floor!

Mr Pot, never worry about adding your contributions! Some things seemingly relevant only to type 2s are also relevant to type 1s and vice versa. :)

Found a solution to my foot-on-the-floor!

Hi there, I eat them just before I go to sleep. My routine is normally I go up to bed and eat them whilst reading a few pages of my book! Then sleep. Don't worry about what rules say you should or shouldn't do, if it works for you that is all that matters.

    Type 1 Eating Out

Personally I adopt a suck it and see approach similar to yours. I estimate the carbs in the meal I'm about to have and take my insulin for that. Sometimes I will take a unit less before the meal and adjust with an extra unit or two an hour or so after the meal if I see my levels going up rapidly...

Found a solution to my foot-on-the-floor!

This works for me too, not just by keeping my morning number in the 6s but it keeps me from dropping low during the night. I have around 20g of salted peanuts before bed. I have done lots of experimenting with this over the months and it works for me. There's probably only around 5 carbs in the...

    Disability and exercise

Hi Molly, I wonder whether you are able to get into a swimming pool? There are lots of movements you can make in water hopefully without too much stress on your arthritis etc. Dependent on where you live and your personal circumstances, you may also be able to get help getting to the pool.

How many cups of coffee do you have per day?

I do too although I use a medium cup....I do have to pop the coffee (plus cream) into a microwave to make it hot though having gone to the trouble of investing in an espresso machine. When we were in Italy and I asked for my coffee that way, they were aghast! They did it though.

Physiology of insulin release - know your pancreas

Thanks for posting, interesting article if a little complicated! It serves to remind us that trying to emulate all of this by estimating how much insulin to inject at any given time is somewhat tricky.

    No licence - No income.

It just doesn't work like that though as I realise you know, many people lose out for a whole variety of things that weren't their 'fault'. There is a support mechanism in theory I guess, anyone who is disabled in any way and can't work would be entitled to income support but of course that is...

Opt for Diabetic Choices on Tesco groceries?

I think they've actually gone a step further, 'starchy foods to try' as if this was something you should actually start if you weren't doing it before in the expectation it might help!

Here is a cut & paste straight off their website....Incoming....... CHECK SERVICE AVAILABILITY IN YOUR AREA: ******There are no foods that diabetics cannot eat; however, it is essential to reduce the amount of certain foods and to increase others. Tubs of 'Lift' - reduced by £1 in Morrison's

I have NEVER heard of them. I looked at the link and thought oh, teabags! Now I see they are the brand name of glucose tablets..which of course I have heard of.

    Lada and weight gain.

Hi Millie, I was told by my Consultant (who supports any diet you may choose and is helpful) that it's not so much you are at any risk from DKA simply by being in ketosis (from a keto diet), it's that if you become ill and your glucose levels rise despite your management, to above 13 or so or...

    Grief and managing type 1

Hi Juicy, oh yes, there must be many of us who have felt the same way following a bereavement especially. You get to thinking oh, what's the point in bothering about diabetes when you're in that grieving stage. When my Mum died I stopped eating for a while other than the odd snack, I simply...
