    My journey so far

All, Thank you for your kind words and support. I am hoping that this will help the newly diagnosed. To me, it's easy. Either I control my body and the diabetes or it controls me.

    My journey so far

I have been a member for about a year but haven't posted for a while. I thought I would share with the group. In June 2017 I was diagnosed as Type 2 with a HbA1C of 52. I was lucky they caught it early so I did not have to go on Meds. I have suffered a few injuries and the odd health scare...

    Cholesterol

@Kaity Thorpe Thats good going - well done. I was diagnosed last June and moved to a low carb high(er) fat diet in Nov. Impact on both my HbA1C and cholesterol has been pretty good. HbA1c was 52, last tested in fab 2018 and it was 44. Serum cholesterol level when test in Oct 17 was 5.7, it...

    WHY?!!

If it is T2, then it is just one of those things. Being annoyed at Diabetes is like being annoyed at Measles. Steve Redgrave is T2 and he won Olympic gold medals with the condition. Hopefully you'll agree that he was "fairly" fit and healthy with a monitored diet & exercise regime. Me? I...

    BG Spikes

@eggs11 Good point. I didn't eat breakfast yeaterday as I sometimes skip breakfast on a weekend to reduce my overall daily carbs.

    BG Spikes

I think so too:) This is the first ime my BG has reduced after eating. I am guessing my body is absorbing any impact of the (very low carbs) quite quickly.

    BG Spikes

Morning, I am just checking my understanding of BG spikes and eating. Views/Opinions are welcome. When I test, I tend to test before meals and hten 90 and 120 mins after. Sometimes I also test 150 mins after if I am having a carb heavy food - e.g. Porridge, rice or I am testing a "new" food...

    Help confused !

@sarahkember Morning, Before Diagnosis I used to eat Porridge for breakfast - usually with honey/treacle. I also used to eat 7-8 pieces of fruit per day (if you include the berries), Rice, pasta (love Gnocchi). After diagnosis, Most fruit causes a spike with me although I am OK with...

Type 1 Exploring Low Carb... Advice?!?

Morning, I'm T2 myself so I am not sure how it would work for you but my approach was to keep a food diary. I didn't change my diet in the first week, I just recorded what I ate, and how many carbs were in the various meals/foods. I could then look back and figure out what I could change...

My awesome friend (or, why you should tell people you're diabetic)

I am not a youg peson and T2 (not T1) but If asked ro feel its appropaite I always share that I am T2. T2 (and diabetes in genreal) attracts negative "press" so I fell its my bit to reverese the view (especailly that t" is the lazy disease). Good on you and your friend.

    NHS Dietitian Contradicting Himself

When first diagnosed, I reduced the "extras" in my diet - biscuits, crisp etc. I was already on a "eat well" diet at home as my wife follows slimming world - low fat, fruit & veg, cook from scratch etc. Removing the "extra's" did help - In 5 months I lost 6 kg's and my HbA1C dropped from 52 to...

Type 2s: What was your fasting blood glucose in a morning? (very low chat level)

5.6 at 6.16a.m which is below my average for March (5.7). The highest its been this month is 6.7 last week but I was away for business and had a late steak dinner with a small slice of apple pie with cream the night before. VERY nice but I regretted it when I saw my BG fasting (6.7) the...

    Travelling by air

Bit of a curious/daft question. I am travelling to Dublin tomorrow and will be taking my testing kit in my "hand" luggage. Has anyone had any issues with the testing kits when going through customs? I am thinking the lancets are a really dangerous weapon in the wrong hands:) but given how...

    testing with rice

@LouWilk059 Thanks for the advice. Next time I will, it was getting past my bedtime. What I did find interesting was the way my BG rose and fell. I haven't seen that before, normally it rises and then just falls away.

    testing with rice

@DCUKMod Looks like Basmati rice may be off the list. Following my "success with Pilau rice" I thought I would make Kedgeree for the family. I used plain Basmati rice. Portion size was 80g. Before meal - 5.1 90 mins after - 5.3 (So far so good ) 2 hours after - 6.3 (oh no!) 2.5 hours...
