    DNA TESTING KITS

I bought a 23andMe kit a few years ago, primarily to see what it might reveal about ancestry (and before I realised, I was paying the company to make money from my data!) As part of its "health dispositions" it calculates a polygenic risk score for Diabetes, and mine says I have an increased...

Newly Diagnosed - trying to process the news

The video is informative, but a little misleading. I've only skimmed the first part. Eg, for some of the fruit he is (at best) giving values for the fruit, not per 100g or cup size, whereas for the Berries it looks like (net) Carbs in g per 100g. - Example: The (net) carb loading of...

Newly Diagnosed - trying to process the news

I like fruit.... but had too way much in the past. Now only have small amounts, occasionally. For me critical thing is the amount of carbs I have (eg, if having apple, (rare) ) which is about 12g of carbs, per 100g, would have a small piece so only having about 4 to 5 g of net carbs...

    Brazil nuts and toxicity

Thanks for this - hope you’re feeling better now. I hadn’t realised just 4 Brazil nuts could give the maximum recommended daily adult selenium dose.

    Type 2 Still Under Control

Yes, diabetes almost doubles the risk in this tool. The QRISK3 number just has a binary variable for T2 (yes, or no). So the T2 risk factor covers all the T2s who have medication, insulin and T2 derived health issues (retinopathy etc), those whose blood sugars are out of control, as well as...

    Type 2 Still Under Control

FYI, the Qrisk3 calculator can be found here QRISK3 which you can play around with. I think NICE guidelines place the cut-off for risk at 10%, which once you pass 60 is easy to exceed on this calculator. even for non-diabetics.

Can I ever say that I no longer have Type 2 Diabetes?

Splitting hairs, @MikeZ, if you only want to be labelled as "diabetes free" by insurance agencies etc, then if you passed all the diagnostic tests for Diabetes (FPG, HbA1C, OGTT etc), and were not taking any diabetes medication then you could argue that you weren't "diabetic" ? Since how could...

    I can’t see a future

Hi Sarah, Sorry to hear your news - you have a lot going on in your life & not surprising your feeling very low. Best wishes for the appointment - I hope and pray that this gives you some help and wisdom. (I am not a lawyer but would be surprised if T2 diabetes with medication alone could...

    Mindful Chef and Diabetes UK

The service is relatively expensive (you pay a lot for the ingredients!) but the meals are tasty if you choose the right ones. We used it occasionally during the lockdowns, when it was convenient & as something different. But a year ago I started monitoring my BG levels, freaked out (I’m T2)...

    Glucose Goddess ( Jessie Inchauspé)

I was spiking after the carbs. It was early on in my low carb journey- in the first couple of months. And to really check one would need to try and repeat the same “experiment” a few times under similar conditions, which I didn’t do. We are all different; I no longer have a gallbladder, for...

    Glucose Goddess ( Jessie Inchauspé)

I tried a couple of her hacks last year with a Libre (protein before carbs, which a dietician also suggested to me, apple cider vinegar drink etc) but unfortunately they didn’t work for me.

Help making sense of blood sugar test results

Well done on the weight loss! Re your question, (1) All are “correct” …. but potentially inaccurate (“incorrect”! ). There are measurement errors in HbA1c, which are not well quantified; a quick search shows 5% variation not uncommon. So December and April measurements far enough apart to be...

    5 days of unknown foods

Hi @Antje77, Sounds fun and exciting! Others have already suggested tinned fish ( tuna, mackerel etc). Other ideas : smoked mackerel (can take some soured cream / yoghurt to mix with a bit of mustard) , Parma ham, etc . Capers and olives (sardines+capers+pine nuts+ garlic +small amount of...

Hot at night and raised Fasting BG

Thanks for this. Yes indeed - have further blood tests booked with GP Maybe a coincidence that some of these symptoms started /were exacerbated by starting a low carb diet.

Hot at night and raised Fasting BG

Hi all, 9 months into a (moderate) low carb diet, about 50 to 70g carbs a day, which has lowered my BG spikes and reduced my HbA1c. But having a few issues as my body throws a wobbly ... Still having nocturia, waking a couple of times in the night, but now waking up feeling hot and...

thin fit prediabetic - is there hope?

Hi Twigs, There is a lot of advice on this site about Low Carb diets (e.g. How to Follow a Healthy Low Carb Diet (diabetes.co.uk), the Low Carb forum etc) You're going the right way cutting down carbs and sugars - it's then a question of how many carbs a day you are eating. Everyone is...
