What question would annoy you the most?

Not so much a question as a statement that we all have heard. They'll have a cure in 5 years. That was what? 20. 30 40 years ago?

First thoughts when diagnosed? (Type 1)

I was 60 and was in total shock. I am the only T1 in the family. I have such a visceral, absolute hatred for this disease. It is such a violation & an assault on my body. And I have 2 pages of such descriptions of this! (My venting) I can never & will never accept what has been done to me.

Stress, the cause of type 1

In my case, most definitely YES. I had been put on overnights at work, my dad had just died, I developed pneumonia. I ticked a lot of boxes on the stress chart around that time. I was 60 at the time so I was in total shock. And it was T1 right from the start, none of this t2...

Health Professionals? Nurses? what a joke

As a T1, all that & more....if they even know what T1 is, let alone being one and an adult. Makes one weep if it wasn't so frustrating

At my age is it worth it ?

It is not so much a matter of age, but how much longer you can tolerate surviving with this living hell. I have such a visceral hatred for this curse (T1) that getting through the day is a constant struggle. And no, before anyone says it, happy pills or a psychiatrist will not do one iota of...

    Value of your diabetic team

What a concept!!! Too bad that in real life there is no such thing. Around here if an individual wants to do that you would have to contact each separate service (doctor, dietician, nurse, pharmacist) yourself, most of which is not covered and therefore prohibitally expensive and no...

Did any of you type 1s have a virus before you got diabetes?

Re: Did any of you type 1s have a virus before you got diabe Before dx I was always fairly healthy, rarely having even a cold, but that winter I somehow developed pneumonia. Bingo, there I was Type 1 within a few days. It was that rapid. :(

Anybody else using the Abbott FreeStyle InsuLinx?

I got one as well, set it up myself, but I found it useless and not worth the effort involved. I thought it my be useful as I'm thinking of getting a pump but if a pump takes that much effort, that is a nonstarter as well.

does the weather affect your diabetes?

I have never done well in this HHH weather and it has been an exceptionally hot summer here this year, we're pushing 35c today and I have noticed my bgs are up and consequent insulin use has really gone up.

Maple syrup, a possibility or not?

I don't have it as much as I used to and it doesn't raise the bgs any worse than table sugar for me , just make sure it is the real thing not one ot the many fakes on the market. If you're going to have the carbs have the good stuff. Carol , from here in maple syrup country.

    Not believed

To Phoenix. Adults can and DO get type 1. I was 60 and there are others on this board who developed it as adults as well.

Do prescription drugs affect your BG?

Some do, some do not. I'm also taking Synthroid, that really pushes up the insulin needed. It doesn't seem to affect the BG as much as the insulin absorbtion. Try the drug interaction sites for other info. A good one I've found is iGuard.org. There is also MedWatch or PharmaWatch and also...

    Spoon Theory

I found this site while researching another topic . The writer has Lupus, another auto-immune disease, but plug in type 1 or hypothyroid and it can apply to us. It is so true and realistic, its scary. Would also be a useful tool for those who do not and cannot understand . Carol...

    Good a!c

Good (for me) A1C. I was at the doctor for 3 month check this morning and my A1C was down to 6.1 from 6.6 three months ago. I've been trying for tight(er) control and counting carbs, but unfortunately I've put on a bit of weight but at least something was down! I've had a couple of lows and a...
