    Dry January - unexpected benefit?

Hi All, It's been a while since I visited and posted but wanted to share. Last few months before Christmas were quite stressful at work, and low carb diet wasn't as good as it should have been. Fasting BG levels were gradually increasing, didn't seem that much I could do, was probably liver...

Controlling diabetes by diet, needing advice

Hi Nicki, When I was first diagnosed I seemed to find I was more sensitive to the carbs in wheat flour than chocolate! Many people find Burgen bread OK, you can get it in most UK supermarkets. Or have you tried bread made with rye flour rather than wheat flour? Sue

Good results ........... and not so good results

So, I have fallen off the wagon a bit in the last 6 months. Work has been hectic, the exercise regime has suffered. Diet has been a bit lapse, more lower carb than low carb. I've put on at least half a stone (although BMI still less than 25). I've not been checking the forum for regular...

    Newcomer's test results

Well done on you Hba1c I'd ask for further info about your cholesterol, is not just the total but the component ratio that counts too. Mine has come down from 7.2 to 5.4, and we have agreed that I can avoid statins fir now as my HDL is high and my trigs are low. Bad luck on the folic acid, but...

Annual review - clean bill of health

Finally got to see my diabetes nurse today for my annual review after my blood tests last month. All good news. HbA1c 41, cholesterol levels Ok (total a bit high at 5.4, but HDL was 1.8 and trig was 0.6 so ratios are all good). All other blood results in normal range. Told to carry on doing...

    Confused Newly Diagnosed

Yep I use the SD Codefree meter too. Each of us reacts a bit differently to different foods, so it's good to test (I now know that flour really spikes me). Keep asking questions LouLou, it's one of the ways to learn. You might get lots of different answers, but hopefully you will eventually find...

    Confused Newly Diagnosed

PS My cholesterol levels were similar to yours too. They have come down a bit, but more importantly my proportion of good cholesterol has gone up, so have avoided statins so far too.

    Confused Newly Diagnosed

Hello LouLou, Sorry you have been having such a bad time, and not helped by a really insensitive medical professional, but at least you now have a supportive nurse, so that's good. I'm the same age as you, and was diagnosed last year after a visit to the doctors for completely different...

Milled linseed (flax seed in some countries) - anyone tried it?

I googled for my recipes. Can't remember where I found it, but the recipe for the buns is: 3 tablespoons of ground flax, 1/2 teaspoon baking powder, one egg. Add whatever flavourings (I use 1/2 teaspoon mixed herbs). Mix and microwave for 2 mins (I use a small plastic pudding bowl).

    Guilty conscience?

Now that's just cruel Adrian! Mind you, nearly a week later and I can still vividly remember the dream - I started with the face, and it was only when I got halfway through the cake (in the dream) I remembered the HbA1c test the next day and thought oops! Isn't the mind strange (or maybe it's...

Confused , stressed and shocked ! Please help ?!

Hi Doughnut, I can understand your sense of shock. I too went to the doctor with something completely different and came out with Type 2 diabetes. So I read and read, and convinced my doctor and diabetic nurse that I wanted to try diet and exercise for the first few months at least. They...

Milled linseed (flax seed in some countries) - anyone tried it?

I am a very recent convert to flax bread buns. Just bought a coffee grinder and a supply of seed, as it works out much cheaper. Think I prefer the brown linseed to golden linseed, but throw in a few mixed herbs and the buns taste yummy with either. And a great source of fibre. (ps flax bread...

    Guilty conscience?

Dreaming of caterpillar cake clearly works. I rang for my result today, my HbA1c is back at 41 - yippee! All I need to do now is manage to get an appointment with the DSN to get all my other results and annual checks done (which is turning out to be more a challenge than I expected!).

    Diabetes burnout, anyone?

Hi Carlos, I'm type 2, and have only been so for about 18 months, but in my limited experience this forum has been great. There is loads of positive energy and encouragement, and the opportunity for virtual hugs when you are feeling rubbish. Yes there are also some posts about the less positive...
