NHS Direct doctor says... NO testing when taking Metformin

I haven't read through the whole thread as it's so large but I'm disgusted with the way the original poster was spoken to by the 111 doctor. Although I can't say as I'm particularly surprised. When I was diagnosed my BS was 28.1, the doctor was convinced I had ketoacidosis and bundled me off to...

    Survey for refusal of strips

Well I guess I might get a check after six months, as I noticed that I only have two issues left on my repeat prescription for metformin. I'm not massively happy with my GP in general really, as when I had my Hba1c results all she would tell me was "you're doing really well". When the Desmond...

    Attended my Desmond course today.

That's pretty frustrating. A course that's designed to help people with newly diagnosed diabetes should be standardised, whether we agree with it's contents or not. If I hadn't joined this forum when I was first diagnosed I wouldn't have the faintest idea about the benefits of testing, and...

    Survey for refusal of strips

I haven't been refused, but they were never offered and I was warned not to do it myself as "I would get obsessed with it". Given that my BG was 25.8 when I was diagnosed, if I didn't test I'd never know if my lifestyle changes were working as I've only been offered one appointment a year to...

    Attended my Desmond course today.

I rather suspect you're right about the meters. The Desmond course I attended certainly didn't hand them out, in fact they told us we don't need to test... so unless something's changed since March their policy doesn't seem to be handing freebies out to Type 2 sufferers. I must have been lucky...

Introduce Yourself: Answer Some Personal Questions

Not sure I'd call it art but yeh, our website is on my profile under 'information'. Not sure if including it here would classify as spam so I won't risk it. :)

Introduce Yourself: Answer Some Personal Questions

Apparently my profile isn't complete if I don't post in this forum, so I'll go for the easy option and use the ready-made template. :p Include a photo here if you wish to. Nah. Don't think I'll inflict that on anyone. What is your name? Sarah How old are you? 46 Are you male or female...

    DSN rant

Ok, thanks everyone. The only diabetes specialist I've seen thus far was the Desmond course nurses. Although I think the GP I saw back in Feb may be the 'diabetes doctor' as she wasn't my regular GP. I'm lucky this place is here, or I wouldn't know very much at all.

    DSN rant

Is a DSN a diabetes nurse? Sorry if it's a stupid question, but since I was diagnosed in late Feb I've only seen the doctor once.. who gave me a repeat prescription for metformin and a referral to the Desmond course. That was pretty much all the contact I've had. Well except for seeing my...

    Metformin side effects

If you're still having problems after a month, definitely ask to be given SR Metformin. I had the same issue and tolerated it for three months. Since going on Slow Release I've had hardly any issues at all. I never had a dry mouth though.

    Latest way to kick T2

The front page of the BBC triggered this, by any chance? Bariatric surgery for all !!!! I've been sitting here seething for the last hour. Out of interest I checked the results from the Diabetes UK survey, and only 6.2% of newly diagnosed Type 2 patients are referred on to diet...

Type 2's: What was your fasting blood glucose in a morning?

5.0 this morning, and has been 5.x for a week now. Looks like I'm finally getting to grips with my fasting level. Yay!

Type 2's: What was your fasting blood glucose in a morning?

6.5 this morning. I don't get my body at times, I'm frequently 5 or below an hour after food in the evening, and higher in the morning.

Excuses given why you shouldn't test

Similar to the above, my doctor told me not to test as I might get obsessed. I ignored her, as I find it motivating to see it going down or up. If it goes up, I try harder to keep it down. I haven't been offered strips or a meter, so am financing it myself. I doubt I'd get it even if I asked.

Newly Diagnosed, worried about eyesight problems...

Thanks so much for all your replies, it really has eased my mind somewhat. I bought myself a pair of cheapo ready readers today, as I can't function as an illustrator at all if I can't see what I'm drawing! At the moment my eyesight has done a complete 360 - For the first time since I was a...

Newly Diagnosed, worried about eyesight problems...

Yikes, sounds like I may have to rein in my enthusiasm for new glasses. :nailbiting: Thanks for the info. I feel like I've been stumbling about in the dark a bit lately, most of it I can cope with but after dad's blindness (and then a descent into advanced dementia) my eyesight going wibbly...

Newly Diagnosed, worried about eyesight problems...

Oh, those look good. Thank you! My doc doesn't seem to be too keen on me testing, she told me to only test once a week, and that was only after I told her I already bought a meter. I have a feeling that I won't get any help with prescriptions from them but I can ask. My blood sugar has fallen...

Newly Diagnosed, worried about eyesight problems...

Thanks for the replies. I guess I am a little impatient but I get really worried about my eyesight as my father has gone blind due to melanoma associated retinopathy. So far I've only had a ten minute appointment with my doc about the diabetes and a big pile of metformin boxes. She has me...

Newly Diagnosed, worried about eyesight problems...

I can read my screen, which I guess you would call intermediate, but I can't read anything close such as on my tablet or a book/letter. I have to hold everything at least at arms length to read it at the moment.

Newly Diagnosed, worried about eyesight problems...

Hi all, I was diagnosed type 2, two weeks ago. I'm on 4x500mg metformin daily, and have started to lose weight but have a loooong way to go yet. My doctor didn't see the need for a meter, but I got one anyway as I find it motivates me to take care of myself a bit better. For the last month...
