I've got my first proper appointment with the diabetes nurse this Thursday - I did see her last week but the appointment had been mis-booked so she had to re-book it - She mentioned checking my feet well not to sound like a total idiot but other than checking I've got two of them and that each only has five toes that aren't webbed what exactly a foot check it consist of?

Also she said I should get the flu jab as I'm now in an at risk group I've never had the flu in my life so is it worth getting?

Hi there. I've just had my 1st appointment with the DSN (Diabetes Specialist Nurse).

She will examine your feet to check for any sores, including the soles and check between your toes. She will also check your pulse for each foot. Yep, I didn't realise that a pulse could be felt in your feet but that's what she did, along with a medical student who was also present.

She will also check the sensation and feeling on the soles of your feet. I don't know what the instrument was called but it looks like a plastic stick with a very fine wire attached to it. She will touch each foot in different places and ask if you can feel it each time. I was asked to shut my eyes / look away whilst she did this.

Thankfully my feet were fine :)

Advice wise, she'll tell you to do a daily self check of your feet, keep them moisturised and to wear socks/shoes and slippers around the house. I'm terrible for going barefoot in the summer and I rarely wear slippers until the depths of winter set in. I'm going to have to get some that I like and start wearing them I think.

Hope this helps?

Oops, just realised I didn't answer your other question about the flu jab

I'd never had a flu jab either but opted to have it, encouraged by hubby who felt I should. There is a thread on here about the flu jab if you can find it. It will answer some of your queries and it has to be up to you whether to have it or not.

Good Luck :)

Acceptance of health treatment claims that are not adequately supported by evidence. I dislike it when people sell ineffective and even harmful alternative health products to exploit the desperation of people with chronic illness.

There are several threads about the flu jab around at the moment. Yes, it's worth getting because it's a very unpleasant illness for anyone but in diabetics it can be even more severe and potentially put you in hospital with pneumonia. Our bodies are not as good at fighting infections as non diabetics are. There is a lot of misinformation around about the flu jab so if you hear anything negative about it just ask and I can link you to some medically correct information. You can also ask your doctor about it.

thanks I honesty had no idea what she was going to be checking and seeing as I rarely if ever got to the doctors its not like I know her well enough to ask when she was so rushed.

Diabetes, know it alls
You may well have your weight recorded along with your waist measurement and blood pressure checked. No idea about the waist measurement, but I guess it must show something......

Check moisturiser for water content when using on the feet, if it contains water don't put it between toes as it can cause athletes foot. Diabetic creams usually say this, I use E45 but avoid between the toes

I must admit to moisturising in between my toes, because mine DO get dry and so do my heels. I use organic Extra Virgin coconut oil which is naturally anti-fungal and anti-bacterial. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17651080

I never walk around barefoot though ! That's just not safe IMO.

Greetings everyone,
I also had my feet examined because i felt i was suffering from nerve neuropathy. It seems i dodged that awe bullet. What is happening while walking excising etc. I'm tilting in onto my inner ankle thus causing a nerve impingement. A special sneaker and inserts will eventfully relief me of this discomfort. However i will be seeing a neurologist next week for some other issues that have developed. The sneaker if wondering is called a motion control running shoe the insert is power step pro that are fitted by a podiatrist.
