Being overweight is usually seen as the main risk factor for T2 but in reality which came first, obesity or insulin resistance? Just being curious really.
A diagnosis of borderline T2 is [presumably] the same as one of insulin resistance?

It is thought that obesity is a symptom of T2, not the cause. It all starts with insulin resistance, which leads to over production of insulin from the pancreas. Insulin is a fat carrying hormone and deposits it round the organs and fat cells. T2 diabetes blood sugar levels come much later.
Thank you all for your replies, you've told me what I suspected. It basically amounts to having an allergy to carbohydrate and explains why thin people develop T2. In fact a diagnosis of borderline diabetes is potentially as serious as one of Type 2 and means one has to be careful about carbs for the rest of life.
It rather blows apart the received wisdom as perpetrated by the NHS though: in particular the so called Eatwell Plate. Who ever would have thought that was a good idea for diabetics!
