Not T1 so can’t help there, but don’t rely on taking nuts, if you are on a flight with someone with a nut allergy they may take the nuts off you, happened to a friend of mine as there was a child travelling with a serious nut allergy so the whole flight including meals were nut free, they just asked if you had nuts when boarding and were asked to put them in a bin they were holding. Of course they are relying on people’s honesty

I've traveled with lucozade in hand luggage on all previous flights, which I've had to buy airside at an extortionate price, jelly babies are another thing to bear in mind for hypo treatment. My OH will have all sorts of snacks in her bag so I'm ok if I get the munchies mid flight but as the longest flight I've taken in recent years has only been two hours to Barcelona hunger hasn't been a big concern.

Why does having Type 1 mean you need to take snacks on a flight?
I understand the need for hypo treatment but Type 1 does not need snacks any more than someone without diabetes.
Before and since my diagnosis, I often carry muesli bars in my hand luggage.

I always take a tube of Fruit Pastilles with me if I need them for hypos. They work quickly and don't taste too bad either.

Being T1 since the age of 3(now 57), things have kept changing over the decades. Saying that, my goto now is jellybabies for hypo, Nairns Ginger Oat biscuits, they now come in a box of 4 separate packs, each containing 4 biscuits( used to 5 biscuits per pack!).
Each biscuit contains 6.6g carbohydrate. Slow sustainable energy!
Hope that helps

The only thing I worry about is having plenty of hypo treatment in my pockets, so that if I go hypo while the seat belt light is on I can still treat it. And I also find hypos are more likely to occur while transiting through airports, so I need them easily found then. (Going through security while hypo is no fun.)

I have to admit I’m curious about why you’re asking (no judgement!!) my reason being, even on a flight you should have all your equipment with you to eat and bolus for any snacks you like. Are you concerned about anything in particular that makes you want something low carb? Might help readers to address your question better if we knew a bit more

Honestly I don’t snack at all. I would just wait until I had the first lovely holiday meal in front of me and indulge then. Snacking for me involves insulin even when the item is carb free it makes my levels raise, so I don’t bother. Would always have jelly babies anyway if I felt I needed a nudge up.

Hi Darion I don’t tend to snack unless going low-my go to for hypos is raisins or sultanas to avoid ultra-processed options such as wine gums, lucozade etc. They work well and are a healthier option. Enjoy your trip to Greece!

If flying over a meal time I always take a bag of Baby Bel cheeses as they travel well, covered in wax, home made low carb crisp bread (or crackers. Some from supermarkets are 3-4g carbs each) and an apple. Jelly Babies too for hypos. I look out for other sweets too if abroad eg marshmallows that have glucose as the first ingredient as they work without the body having to change the sugar in them to glucose first.

I travel with Wasa sandwich biscuits and baby food yoghurt pouches. Have actually got the yoghurt pouches safely through security these days. As long as they are under 100 ml. You need to be mindful of the fact that your flight might be delayed and take you over your next scheduled mealtime. Happened recently at Gatwick on my way home and managed to check myself into one of the lounges, so I could literally browse everything on offer…cooked breakfast was good. Because that delay was so long I claimed the entrance fee to the lounge back off the airline.. and got it! I sometimes order the prepaid snacks from the inboard food or a meal if the flight is long enough, so I know there will be some food for me. So far not impressed with any of the airline food. Ordered 2 different meals on last flight with DH and let him have what I didn’t want

Interesting you have scheduled meal times. I didn’t think Type 1s have to do that anymore with the types of insulins we use. I just eat when convenient to do so.

OMG. If I had scheduled meal times, I would seriously struggle.
In the 20 years since I was diagnosed and started on basal bolus, meal times (or whether I was going to eat or not) have been completely flexible.

It makes no difference I was just stating the fact that I'm type 1, using it as a way to open my question.

Ah babybels are my usual go to at home for some reason they didn't enter my thoughts. I took a bag of barons and dextros incase of hypo and then just a sandwich some crackers and mixed fruit.
All worked out in the end

Thanks for the reply.
