Amlodipine -Raised Blood Glucose Levels

Hi All,

At my last routine hospital visit a couple of months ago all was going well, hba1c came back at 6.2, a little higher than previously but still acceptable. My only problem was my BP, which was still a little high, typically 145/85 so the specialst also subscribed me 5mg of Amlodipine.

Over the last month, I have been finding it more and more difficult to control my blood glucose levels, which have been reaching 18+ regularly and extra doses of insulin have had less effect than before.

I decided to do bit of research on possible side effects of Amlodipine and one of them is Hyperglycemia and decreased tissue sensitivity to insulin.

This would seem to make sense, I'm going to stop taking the daily dose of 5mg of Amlodipine to see if things return to how they were.

Has anyone else heard of this problem or have any experience of it?

Please discuss this with your doctor before taking any action to stop taking this medication.

I'm with sue
don't just stop using a medicine without discussing it with the doctor. Sometimes that can have a "rebound " efect and be very dangerous. I don't know the medicine you are talking about. See the doctor.

Amlodipine is an anti Hypertensive Drug and is used in the prevention and treatment of hypertension and angina. You should not stop taking this without talking to your GP as stated previously.

I've only been on this medication for the last 8 weeks. I didn't think stopping would have any major effect, apart from maybe making my blood glucose levels drop back down. I'll make an appointment with the doctor.

There is some evidence that sudden withdrawal of calcium-channel blockers may be associated with an exacerbation of angina.

So it would be prudent to discuss this with the doctor in case of chest pain !!

I see that your original post was a long, long time ago, but I was wondering did your GP, diabetes consultant or diabetes specialist nurse ever help you to resolve the issue with the blood pressure medication raising your blood sugars and what the end solution was?

I am also on amlodipine but was put on this medication for BP at the same time as being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and would be very interested to hear if anyones blood sugars had increased while taking amlodipine?

I was on 10mg amlodopine and it did not affect my bg I did have other issues with it.

I decided to cease taking it.. the gp advised me to continue which they always do with bp and cholesterol meds.

It is your choice if you take them or not the gp can not make you... you do however need to know there could be consequences to not taking them

But then there is also risks when taking them

Do your research and talk to gp about alternatives as there are plenty most gp's prefer ramipril or similar or candesartan or similar apparently these are better in helping prevent kidney issues

There are a very large number of medications to control blood pressure available, not just those referred to above. I have experienced side-effects from more than one, but a GP prescribed a different drug for me on each occasion I complained. It is always worthwhile talking to your doctor and requesting a change, if you believe you are suffering side-effects.
