I have seen on a few sites that there are awareness ribbons and pins, but they all seem to be from the USA, and here there are only badges which are good for kids and teenagers but the more mature folk I know are saying 'it would be nice if we could have something like that here in the UK', I would wear one with pride to bring the attention to people that this is a serious illness, and not a joke as some uninformed idiots think it is. and that it is not through eating to much sugar and sweets and chocolate. How could I go about asking to make and distributing such items? can anyone help?

I think that's an excellent idea: perhaps Diabetes UK would be interested... it could be launched at the start of 'Diabetes Week' in 2014... there must be a number of badge / emblem design and manufacture companies capable of producing something decent and stylish!
Perhaps a 'skull and crossbones', using syringes as the crossbones and a yellow smiley pulling a grimace.
Anyone else have thoughts?
