Hi again :D

am doing a bbq sometime next week at the request of my girlfriends children, what can I have to replace burgers, sausages etc?

Also, I have been told that white wine (dry) is ok for a type2, is this true (dont like red!!!!!)

I suppose cider is out of the question?

Mark

Hi Mark,
Dry white wine is fine - the alcohol will actually lower your blood sugar. Most cider has much the same sugar content as beer. The lowest in carbs is Strongbow at 1.5g per 100ml.

As Sue says, can't see why you would not want burgers and bangers, but an alternative would be steak, lamb fillets or chops, spare ribs, chicken joints or breasts (but make sure they are thoroughly cooked).

according to my diet reference sheet the nurse gave me last week, it says I should not eat burgers, saus etc.

Dont like strongbow, training cider that one!!!!

I can understand some sausages being a problem, some of the "best buy" ones are full of cereal, but it sounds like the dreaded Fat phobia to me. Just read Gary Taubes Diet deception and eat sausages( get the good ones)
We're doing a barbecue tthis weekend (introducing a new grandchild to extended family.) I'm more worried by the prospect of rain!!
In my fridge, I have sausages, burgers and mince to make fresh ones, chicken pieces and lamb kebabs. I also have some tortilla wraps and will get fresh rolls from the bakers on Saturday morning ( I won't eat any of those) there will be bowls of salads, barbecued veggies and fruits and cream for dessert. Only 2 diabetics will be present.

those suggestions sound good.

Sausages are a good question - cheap ones are full of rubbish - I think if you speak to a butcher ask him what he puts in them . I use a local butchers and his are meat and very nice.

Burgers are fine - in fact most good butchers make their own and are just meat. If you make your own from good quality mince then they are nice too.

Nurses - ahhhh!!!

Its pouring down here and I have water pouring in thro the hall window!

Hi

Gluten free sausages are really delicious, very meaty and are less than 1 gram carb per sausage. You can get them in most supermarkets. Taste the Difference ones in Sainsbury's are good, - Toulouse and Scillian.

Enjoy

I find that the diet sheets that nurses give out are very useful. What you need to do with them is tear them in half, then tear each half in half again so that you end up with sheets of about 4ins by 6 ins. Now thread some string through them and hang them in the loo, where they can be put to really good use.

Ally has frequently mentioned that dietary advice given out by nurses is often completely inappropriate for diabetics. And Ally is a professional dietician - nurses aren't.

Unfortunately the stronger ciders also tend to be sweeter. A pint of scrumpy works out at 15g carbs and a pint of vintage cider is more than 40g carb. You can always balance the food out so that whatever meat you eat is accompanied by a green salad and no potatoes or bread (so virtually zero carbs). Then a pint of a stronger cider would give you you carb intake for the meal!

Now that's what you call initiative   !

Sorry, but diabetes beats hypertension in the diet stakes! I don't know if you are overweight or not but,if you get your diabetes under control then your hypertension will come down as well.Been there done that and now got normal blood pressure. Please have a read of the various diet tips on here. The threads on carbs are particularly interesting and give you lots of 'food for thought' !

Not having seen this diet sheet I don't know what it contains but if it tells you to eat a lot of complex carbs,ie bread, pasta, rice and potatoes then I would seriously limit the portion sizes of these. Also simple carbs such as sugar and all added sugars ,which end in 'ose' are also to be avoided to help keep your blood sugars down.As I said in previous post please read some of the discussions on here about diet.

AHHHH - throw it away!! That nurse is out of line giving you that. Ask to be referred to a dietitian.

Thing is it may not even be from them - the sheets circulating from the BHF are nothing to do with them.

It makes my blood boil giving anyone a sheet like that!! Sorry rant over!

We had a bbq today, but ate it at the table, because the rain came down. We had sausages, frankfurters, lamb kebabs, home made burgers and home made chicken kebabs( which were fantastic) We had Green salad, cucumber salad and mixed salad. there was bread for those who wanted it. Desserts were; jelly, fresh fruit salad and lemon cheesecake. Guess which I had. I'm going to do a BG now. will let you know if I kept to target. I was good about what i ate and it was delicious. I'll give anyone who wants it the recipe for thechicken kebabs.

I've checked BG and I admit I took some Starlix before the lunch, just in case! Anyway 2 hours after eating mountains of food, I was 4.2. 14 week old grand daughter was given a little jelly on the tip of a spoon by her doting Grandpa and she loved it
