Type of diabetes
Type 2
Hi,

I have Type 2 diabetes and I have lost about 1 stone over the period of 3 years. Not good as I didn't weigh too much either, rather on the thin side. I don't take any mediaction to control my diabetes and left it to food and exercise for controlling. Don't do any type of exercise and try to be eat good food but I do end up being naughty more often. I have to admit that my diet and lack of exercise will catch up very soon. I want to gain the weight that I have lost and a little more but obviously not jeoparding my blood sugars.

I would really appreciate any advise on foods/meals etc that will help me to gain some weight.

Thanks

This comes up quite a lot, and there is plenty of info here if you do a search.

The problem I can see is, as a T2, you will be producing some insulin. In order to put on weight, you'll need to increase your BG to alevel where your insulin can't cope any more, and so the extra BG will be stored as fat (extra weight).

The problem I can see is - how can you put on weight, AND keep BG down in the proper range?

It's a tough one.

I know that if I wanted to put on weight, I'd have to up my carb intake. From my own experience, I know that eating sandwiches, pasta, jacket potatoes, etc... would cause me to put on weight quickly.

But I'm already overweight, and my weight fluctuates regularly - so the mechanism is already there for me.

As a T2 without a weight problem, I can't see that the mechanism IS there in your body to put weight on. Confusing, isn't it?

Hi sattie,

Ask to be seen by a dietitian to discuss ways in which you can gain weight whilst staying healthy, as a type 2 you are entitled to be see one via your diabetes clinic or gp practice. Good luck!

Hi

Cashew nuts and peanuts tend to put weight on without too much of a rise in bg levels :) So does drinking a small glass of pomegranate juice.

Hi sattie
I was diagnosed about 2 years ago and I can sympathise with you totally I had lost over 2 stone over about 2 and a half years i am struggling to put weight on and get my BGs lower Its my battle of the 7s I want my fasting levels below 7 and my weight above 7 stone I agree that it is a good idea to ask to see a dietitian I found it very helpful .I was advised to eat cheese cream full fat yoghurts in fact full fat anything  She was very good about the carbs when I told her how they affected my BGs She suggested that the GP prescribe me Glucogen which is just a calorie drink Ihave the neural one that has no carbs it tastes like liquid lard  I was also told that resi stance exercise would help to build up my weight to be honest Iam struggling with this but I do know that when I exercise my BGs come down .Snacks are good, nuts have lots of fat but low carb You just need to test .Dont lose heart it can be done .We skinnies can win

Hiya! I lost loads of weight in the first year after diagnosis and I'm still struggling to get the weight back up to 7 stone. I've never been overweight and have a constant struggle to get the weight on without carbs. The best method I found was to have a diet like:

Breakfast: A whole avocado, mixed with ham and sprinkled with walnuts and pumpkin seeds.
Mid-morning snack: Low-carb ham and cheese muffin
Lunch: Whole roast chicken breast, salad with olive oil and balsamic vinegar poured over. 3 strawberries and cream.
Afternoon snack: Handful of mixed nuts e.g. almonds, walnuts, brazil nuts and hazelnuts (avoid peanuts and cashews!)
Tea: Roast lamb steak, roast butternut squash (small amount as highish in carb), roast celeriac, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and green beans (small amount of each). Mint sauce made with mint, vinegar and sweetner (I use Splenda. Do not use mint jelly - it's too high in sugar). A handful of mixed berries and a tablespoon of full fat yoghurt.

This type of menu helped me stop the weight loss and very gradually put a few pounds on. You will have to judge for yourself whether you can tolerate the amount of fat in this though - it's a balancing act! Probably depends how good your cholestorol is. Make sure you test frequently if changing your diet and take a few test 3 or even 4 hours after eating as the fat will slow down the absorption. Good luck.

The best way to gain weight is to eat healthy and bulky diet. Regular use of milk and maximum use of meat and potatoes and banana is very effective for this purpose.

Hi Edden - welcome to the forum!

Unfortunately for many of us, me included, anything other than a very small amount of either potato or banana would send our blood glucose through the roof. They are not good foods for many Type 2s, though there are those who can tolerate them.

The trick is to not let yourself get too hungry. Schedule times for your meals/snacks if you have to, but when you let yourself get too hungry, you can overeat. I've had to learn this lesson the hard way. One trick I've found is to bring snacks with me to work, or grab something from the vending machine and eat it a couple hours before lunch to hold me over and something a few hours before dinner. This gives me something to look forward to in my day and gets me to my main meals. Hope this helps!
