Blood monitor

Hiya could any one help.my mum had a kidney removed 15 years ago 3 years later she was told she had type 2 .mum was given metformin and glritzen or something like that and given a blood monitor.everything as been fine until 6 months ago she lost her blood monitor on holiday when she asked for another her d.n went daft and told her she didnt need to test.then 2 weeks ago she was ill light headed sleepy,no energy so she went to her g.p who took her off the glirtzed sorry dont know how to spell it.anyway her g.p then told her to see the d.n who took bloods and ask mum to test her bloods 3 times a day.the d,n loaned her a meter and gave her strips.i was shocked at this as i wa told i was type. 2 this year i didnt get a blood monitor but surley mum should have one with only haveing one kidney.

Hi, meters are not normally supplied by doctors / DN's though in some places these are given to the docs and nurses by the suppliers who then pass them onto patients as the suppliers make money from the strips.

Getting hold of a meter should not be a problem in the UK, if you ring the likes of Bayer, Abbott Medisense, Lifescan or Accu chek they will more than likely send you one for free. If you search the main web site here there are links to free give a ways though found it quicker to ring them and discuss yours needs.

Unfortunately getting strips for type 2's is a post code lottery. If one is on meds that can cause hypos like gliclazide you should be able to justify the needs to have strips, also if one drives then you need to test before driving with such meds. I had to put a letter in to my GP practice stating why I wanted strips and gave all the reasons why, I did get my strips added.
