Blood Test Query

Have received a blood test form, in the post today complete with a hand written note from my consultant which was done for speed and cut through the hospital mail circus.
My queries are:-
Why does he want a fasting gut hormone profile.
I've also had raised levels of CA19-9 for over a year. Should I be concerned by this?
Thank you

Hi, just wondering do you have stomach upsets/bowel problems? When was your last blood test?
The CA19-9 test is usually done as investigation of a problem with digestion/colon.

Hope all goes well

Hi Karen, in answer to your question I have extra acid in my stomach which was found by endoscopy. I've had ultrasound, mri, ct & all they have shown is a wider than normal bile duct.
For the last 4 or 5 years I've had the occasional pain which I put down to a grumbling appendix. In the last month I've had it permanently. My gp has referred me for a pelvic ultrasound on Tuesday - the day after I get my pump lol. I don't know how the diabetic bods found out about ultrasound but their response is blood tests

Sorry Karen I forgot to mention my last blood test was in November.
Until Oct 06 my sugars were between 15 & 25 but almost overnight they hit over 35 and have stayed there.
The hosp say that something happened but they can't find what the trigger was.

Oh ok, well there is obviously something not quite right with you gut, and I am just wondering here, my bg was totally off the scale for years whilst I was in denial and I started with complications, one of them was gastroparesis, which is slow emptying of the stomach, you feel sick, you vomit you have pain and you get constipation and more. I had to have loads of tests and goodness before they got the diagnosis, including the CA19-9, this test is a tumour marker, dont panic though, you can do a google search for further info on this test, though if you are anything like me dont go searching on the net for any disease, I am the biggest hypochondriac ever, I pick up everyones illness, I tell you even prostrate trouble, yep thats right give me 10 mins in the surgery and for some reason I must have that kind of stupid face that makes everyone hone in on me and tell me all their woes and there was this elderly gentleman telling me about his prostrate, I was sympathetic ok, but started to hurt in places that I havent even got.

Anyway I hope things get sorted for you quickly

Love

Karen, you always make me smile, thank you.
I am also an internet hypochondriac. I have the bma's drug book which my oh calls my hypochondriac's handbool lol.
People usually avoid me at the drs. Well they have ever since some old boy came in clutching a towel. He chose to sit next to me and proceeded to open the towel so he could show me that his colostomy bag had split. That was 3 years ago and I'm sure the smell still lingers!
Will add prostate on the list for next drs visit:D

ROTFL you poor thing, similar experience, as I said I am sure its my type of stupid face that attracts these people to me, on the tube here in London, this poor lady, must have been well over 70 or so, suddenly started telling me all in graphic detail about her pile operation, my word, the other passengers creased themselves, she was talking really loud too, telling me she is alone as well and this and that, I could barely sit anymore I was in pain, guess it could have been worse, I mean she might have shown me the scars as well!

Re your bg, have you been given more medication to try and bring it downn, have you tried a couple of days of minimum carb intake? How long has it been so high? How do you cope, I remember way back when I was in denial I just slept almost round the clock, except for eating, was sweating day and night so much that I had to change the bedding and yet all that still didnt bother me so much that I would sctually try and do something about it.Thinking back, probably my brain was soaked in sugar syrup...

Pmsl at piles scars! Shame you didn't have a pocket full of elastic bands to save her another trip to the hosp. They do say pile cream is good for wrinkles so might have to put piles on my list too. It's that or I'll have to start ironing myself!
My sugars went silly in Oct 06. Knew things were bad when I went into the mens loo cos I couldn't read the sign. Thats my excuse & I'm sticking to it.
Made gp test to see if I was going thru the menopause. My oh says I'm becoming a cat cos I sleep 22hrs a day

I've been limiting my carbs to less than 50g a day for over a year. My consultant says that because my sugars are so high my pancreas has become toxic which is keeping the sugars high so I'm in a vicious circle they can't break.
Have had pio & rosiglicazone with no change.
Out of desperation he's trying a pump on Mon. If that doesn't work I'm off to see a professor in Cambridge who specialises in insulin resistance. They've already spoken to him but as yet he doesn't have any new ideas:(
