Hi I was hoping somebody can reassure me? I had Flu followed by Pnemonia, was poorly for 2 weeks and went back to work on Monday. Had been really thirsty but put it down to the infection and antibiotics I had been taking. Realised when driving to work that I just couldn't see properly. Hadn't been out of the house for a couple of weeks but vision was fine before then. I was so worried I got an emergency optician appointment - he said it was Diabetes as my vision had deteriorated in a couple of weeks what he would expect to see in 20 years.
He sent me immediately to the doctor with an urgent letter for doc. I didn't see a doctor but the receptionist spoke to the duty doctor who said Diabetes type 2 and sent me for a fasting blood test and and H1AC (?) which I went for first thing Tuesday. The results still are not back I'm hoping for tomorrow but I'm in limbo. I'm so worried for my sight as I just can't see and I cannot drive due to the poor vision - optician said I must not drive. He said it was because the lens has changed shape and swollen changing vision but once sugars are under control it should revert to normal.
Has anyone any experience with how long this may take and what I can expect when I see the doctor. Is it likely I will have medication? My two grandads, dad and uncle had/have Diabetes and I was Impaired Glucose Tolerance a couple of years ago. Optician said he see such cases a couple of times a year and has never been wrong so I'm expecting a firm Diagnosis. I'm sort of hoping he might be wrong but then I wonder why I can't see?
I really appreciate any comments, I feel so lost and don't know what to do. Thank you in advance x
Hi ya mossy, how are you coping? This is the same that happened to me mate its a lot to take in but id gladly say dont listen to much to the nhs the lads n lasses in here no all the ins and outs better than most
Hi Happy. Let me start by saying I understand how you feel. Back in December my vision deteriorated suddenly and I started experiencing double vision. Have a read of my experience at: http://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/fourth-nerve-palsy.69152/
In my experience you need to go to a specialist eye hospital. Opticians are all well and good but they don't have all the answers. The A&E that I went to did a CT scan and confirmed I had not had a stroke but in terms of getting a confirmed diagnosis you need a specialist eye doctor.
Hopefully the issue with your eyes can be fixed with glasses to allow you to see properly. In my case the prism lens that i was given improved my vision within a few weeks, coupled with my strict diabetes control, though when i was reading up on it, it can take people as long as 6 months + depending on the damage and type of damage.
Lastly you need to strictly control your diabetes and there is plenty of information on this forum that you will find useful. Unfortunately that may not be the advice the doctors give you but you need to test before and after every meal to understand how your body is reacting to different foods.
Don't lose hope, get the diagnosis and work the problem.
Thank you everybody, what a helpful site this is. I had my appointment for results today. My readings were fasting blood sugar 18 normal is between 4 and 6 I was told. And my H1ac(?) was 11.1. Nurse said that the steroids I have just been on could well have tipped it over the edge but I gave most likely had it for a while. I am now on Metformin and she says my sight should return as the sugars become controlled.
Morning Guys. I too have blurred vision and was referred privately to my local specialist who gave me a Product called Macushield. Not available on the NHS but canbe got from Amazon. Certainly made a real difference to me.[/QUO
