What you describe could well be diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage, usually in the feet or hands). It is a very common 'complication' and I found it to be quite unpleasant at times. I took various tablets prescribed by my GP with varying success.
The one thing that did help me and is widely available, both over the counter as well as on prescription, is Capsaicin Cream. It's main ingredient is derived from hot chilli peppers and it causes a constant heat when applied which, over a few days, fools the brain into ignoring the sensations from the damaged nerves and giving the sufferer relief from the pain.
