I used to go by a little pocket sized book and look up everything after weighing it meticulously which was very tiresome to say the least. However, I have now found that using a forum called "My Fitness Pal" is really super for doing all that calculating for me and arriving at the total amounts of calories, carbs, protein etc. etc. per day.
As far as the daily grind of weighing food continually I have found that it just becomes second nature to do it and I keep my little scales on my work top permanently.
