Confused and in need of some advice

Hi - I have just been diagnosed (last Friday) as diabetic but am slightly confused with my glucose results. I'm afraid that when my GP told me, I went into shock mode and didn't quite take in what he was saying. Anyhow, I have an appointment to see the Nurse at my surgery in 2 weeks time where, I have been told by my GP that she will explain everything but I wanted to double check my bloods so asked for a copy, which came in the post today and this is where I get confused. I had a glucose test where you fast, have blood taken, drink a sugery drink then more blood taken 2 hours later. The results were 4.8 mmo/L and after the drink 12.4 mmo/L. From what I understand from this forum, the first result is good and I'm not diabetic but looking at the second result it seems that I am. The only other test results I can quote is my HbA1c taken in April of 6.4%. I have lost nearly 2 stone since March and have cut out sugar, chocolate, sweets, cakes etc and am eating a much healthier diet.

I am still trying to get my head around everything but realise, from all the knowledged gained from this forum, that self testing is the most proactive thing I can do to keep a check on everything. Whether the nurse will run with that idea is another thing, but I will cross that bridge when I come to it.

Sorry for waffling

Julie

Hi Julie - welcome to the forum.

I think you could look at your diet a bit more as its not just the sugary things you need to cut out to make sure your levels are as good as possible. Carry on with the testing to see what certain foods do to your levels. Well done on your weight loss by the way. Here is very useful information which is given to newly diagnosed members which you might like to read and which will tell you more about how you need to eat to keep on looking after your BG levels:
