I am 46 and been type 2 since 2003. Finally decided to give this diet a go, even though it has only been tested on newly diagnosed, what have I got to lose. Anybody else tried it who has suffered for 10 years or more? What were the successes?

Whilst it may or may not work for you due to length of time you have been diagnosed, you really need to see your G.P. as you are taking a lot of medication and insulin.

Professor Taylor, who devised this diet, recommends medical supervision.

Thanks, I will do, and I will keep a close eye on blood. I am hoping for a miracle but I also realise it might be too little too late, but decided that wasn't a good reason not to try. please give me as much advice as you think, much appreciated x

Before you go down this route, have you ever had any advice with regard to what to eat?

Give us a day's menu and we will try and help.

Have you read the information that @daisy1 gives to the newly diagnosed? There may be something there that can help.

What was your last HBA1c and do you test your blood sugars before and after meals?

Do you have any other conditions that require medication?

A lot of questions but I do worry that the amount of medication that you are on and doing the Newcastle Diet may cause you problems, especially hypos and so if you could gain control by changing your diet you may be happier than going on a starvation diet.

The hardest part of the Newcastle Diet is what happens afterwards with regard to what you then eat.

Hello Helen and welcome to the forum :)

As Catherine suggests, have a look at the information we give to new members and try it out, following what she said. Ask as many questions as you need to on this and someone will be able to help.

BASIC INFORMATION FOR NEWLY DIAGNOSED DIABETICS

Diabetes is the general term to describe people who have blood that is sweeter than normal. A number of different types of diabetes exist.

A diagnosis of diabetes tends to be a big shock for most of us. It’s far from the end of the world though and on this forum you’ll find over 140,000 people who are demonstrating this.

On the forum we have found that with the number of new people being diagnosed with diabetes each day, sometimes the NHS is not being able to give all the advice it would perhaps like to deliver - particularly with regards to people with type 2 diabetes.

The role of carbohydrate

Carbohydrates are a factor in diabetes because they ultimately break down into sugar (glucose) within our blood. We then need enough insulin to either convert the blood sugar into energy for our body, or to store the blood sugar as body fat.

If the amount of carbohydrate we take in is more than our body’s own (or injected) insulin can cope with, then our blood sugar will rise.

The bad news

Research indicates that raised blood sugar levels over a period of years can lead to organ damage, commonly referred to as diabetic complications.

The good news

People on the forum here have shown that there is plenty of opportunity to keep blood sugar levels from going too high. It’s a daily task but it’s within our reach and it’s well worth the effort.

Controlling your carbs

The info below is primarily aimed at people with type 2 diabetes, however, it may also be of benefit for other types of diabetes as well.
There are two approaches to controlling your carbs:

  • Reduce your carbohydrate intake
  • Choose ‘better’ carbohydrates

Reduce your carbohydrates

A large number of people on this forum have chosen to reduce the amount of carbohydrates they eat as they have found this to be an effective way of improving (lowering) their blood sugar levels.

The carbohydrates which tend to have the most pronounced effect on blood sugar levels tend to be starchy carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, bread, potatoes and similar root vegetables, flour based products (pastry, cakes, biscuits, battered food etc) and certain fruits.

Choosing better carbohydrates

Another option is to replace ‘white carbohydrates’ (such as white bread, white rice, white flour etc) with whole grain varieties. The idea behind having whole grain varieties is that the carbohydrates get broken down slower than the white varieties –and these are said to have a lower glycaemic index.
http://www.diabetes.co.uk/food/diabetes-and-whole-grains.html

The low glycaemic index diet is often favoured by healthcare professionals but some people with diabetes find that low GI does not help their blood sugar enough and may wish to cut out these foods altogether.

Eating what works for you

Different people respond differently to different types of food. What works for one person may not work so well for another. The best way to see which foods are working for you is to test your blood sugar with a glucose meter.

To be able to see what effect a particular type of food or meal has on your blood sugar is to do a test before the meal and then test after the meal. A test 2 hours after the meal gives a good idea of how your body has reacted to the meal.

The blood sugar ranges recommended by NICE are as follows:

Blood glucose ranges for type 2 diabetes
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 8.5 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (adults)
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 9 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (children)
  • Before meals: 4 to 8 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 10 mmol/l
However, those that are able to, may wish to keep blood sugar levels below the NICE after meal targets.

Access to blood glucose test strips

The NICE guidelines suggest that people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes should be offered:

  • structured education to every person and/or their carer at and around the time of diagnosis, with annual reinforcement and review
  • self-monitoring of plasma glucose to a person newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes only as an integral part of his or her self-management education

Therefore both structured education and self-monitoring of blood glucose should be offered to people with type 2 diabetes. Read more on getting access to bloodglucose testing supplies.

Yes try it, see how you get on with it. There are other options though if you get stuck with it.

Good luck, I hope it works for you. :)

Hello, if you have the time I will recommend you read everything on this blog. https://intensivedietarymanagement.com/

It is run a by a canadian doctor called Jason Fung, he is inspired by the research Roy Taylor has done, and uses fasting and a diet centered around whole foods, natural fats, unrefined carbohydrates, meat and dairy, to reverse diabetes in his patients. He is a nephrologist, a doctor specializing in kidney disease, and he had seen to many diabetes patients get progressively worse with normal management, so when he read Roy Taylor research, which says that diabetes can be reversed, he got very inspired and did lots of research, and has used it sucsessfully on his patients. He is very serious and smart, for instance he has a youtube channel very he has many hour long lectures describing his lecture, but most importantly, he interviews his patients, so you can see the results, and hear about their experiences.

Here are two videos for instance:

Richard has had diabetes for 11 years, when he met jason fung, after being in treatment, he is off all of his insulin( the video is 8.46 min long)

Desmond here have had diabetes for longer than 10 years, he talks about his experiences, Balraij, has had it for 10 years, he is of his insulin.(video is about 8 minutes long.

Here is a long talk he gives to his collegaues at his hospital.

In the beginning he refeers to the research done by Roy Taylor, then he shows a case(1.44), Margaret. who have had diabetes for 27 years. And he interviews her and her husband further out in the video., at 43:00. She gets of all her insulin after a couple of weeks. So to me it seems like Jason Fung thinks it is possible for people to reverse, even if they have had it for a long time. Here is a link of written testimonies. https://intensivedietarymanagement.com/category/patient-testimonials/

Here is an interview he did with BMJ the British medical journal

https://soundcloud.com/bmjpodcasts/dr-jason-fung-on-the-impact-of-diet-on-obesity-and-type-2-diabetes-mellitus?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed:+bjsm/podcasts+(Latest+from+British+Journal+of+Sports+Medicine+podcasts)

Also he recently did a long interview with the Dietdoctor, the swedish physican who has this free lchf website. I have already watched it since a am a member of the swedish version of the site, and being norwegian I understood everything. However, if you become a member of the english version of the site, you can watch it as well. The first month is free, so you can sign up, watch it, then delete your membership and you do not have to pay. The rest of the information on Dietdoctor.com can be found for free on the web anyways, but not the interview with Jason Fung. Goodluck and Pm me if you want more info about him.

HOWEVER THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. Jason Fung thinks you should talk with your doctor if you decide to follow his principles, especially since you are on so much medication. He has a longdistance program where you can talk to him, and he will give you info you can guve to your GP and explain the principles. good luck!

Hi @helenjones, Well done for trying and we all have our fingers crossed for success. Dropping your insulin levels by half after one day may be a little sudden. Have you done that with consultation with your medical team? This is likely why your numbers were raised the next day, but I hope your body will catch up. Just ignore those that say it is pointless due to the length of time blah blah blah - As said above for 8 weeks do you have anything to really lose trying. Even if it isn't a complete success just getting you back to an earlier stage would be a success so that we can then help you manage it so that progression isn't inevitable.

Good Luck and keep going and talk to your medical team.
