Depression and diabetes

I Don, t know about type 1 but I, m type 2 and have depression with traits of bipolar.myself, I Don, t class depression as being related to diabetes as I, ve had these for a number of years though I could be proved wrong

It's more the constant management of it. The having to say no to foods or activities that you otherwise would say yes to. The anxiety of hypos, the worry of what the highs will do to you. The worry of complications.

Much greater mental load than those without diabetes.

Yes totally agree it's always in the back of your mind . Etc how much can I eat how much insulin to take it is a constant worry

I've been asked every other time at the hospital or surgery if i've had any depression. The whole thing is linked to it.

It's probably only in the last 10 years that I've been asked about depression and how I'm coping mentally with the condition, I think they were a long-time catching up with connecting the two.

I have been a diabetic for 32 years . I was wondering if this disorder is linked with depression
Think medics recognise that long term diabetes can lead to feeling overwhelmed/despondent/depressed and my consultant uses a questionnaire to find out how I'm coping and assess my mental state. (I've been diabetic T1 for 45 years) Clear, achievable goals and being kept up to date on the new technologies helps to keep me positive. I'm also lucky to have a fantastic diabetic team at the hospital where nothing is too much trouble. Good luck.

I was advised by one doctor when experiencing a 'downer' that yes it is linked to fluctuating glucose levels, the more stable your control the better your moods. Made a lot of sense to me at the time as it was before I started on a low carb diet and I was all over the shop, I couldn't dig myself out of it, once I started low carb it got a lot better

By the way type 1 and depression is linked, as said above fluctuating glucose, as well as constant care and management can be overwhelming.

My personal suggestion is to try and live in the moment, take each day as it comes, and take a walk somewhere green to clear your head, talk too, that helps a lot :)

Hi mark yeh like everyone has said there has been a significant link to it. I tired but due to funding couldn't to set up a support group therapeutically and one and one counselling for diabetics what I'm saying is basically ever want info just email I've done loads of research with it for funding purposes
