Depth perception - retinopathy?

Think depth perception comes from the brain interpreting the difference in the images between each eye.
Could be that now one eye is so dtdominant that only one image is being used.

Try closing alternate eyes and see if there is any difference in perception.
You can try bringing the points of your left and right forefinger together. Quite difficult to do with only one eye unless very slowly and the apparent size of the fingers can be used.

I think you have probably hit the nail on the head there! Makes perfect sense when you say it, but never occurred to me before. (Durrrh!) I wonder if this is something that will improve with time or getting new glasses if/when they finish with the laser treatments or something I'm gonna have to learn to live with. I'm a bit in limbo with it all at the minute not knowing where to go for advice. It's like, I think I can see everything just fine in many ways, but when it comes to the crunch - I can't. Don't know if that makes sense!

I know exacly what you mean and i agree wih the explanation given above. I think the answer to your question from my own experience , is that ihe problem decreases as the treatments succeed. My situation has improved after several years but in some sittuations I still experience problems.
I have had numerous laser and other reatments and can't cope with specs of any kind but of course his is an individual problem.

I hope that it will clear up compleely for you in time.In my case when I test each eye individually I see the same image at different sizes and heights.

This is still an improvement on my days of falling downstairs , misjudging slopes and being unable to see dark or light objects when placed on top of eac other.. I am grateful for the improvement but the problem can sometimes catch me unawares.

 I'll not tell anyone....

Before laser, apart from needing glasses for far sightedness, my eyesight was grand. Two laser sessions done and it's much worse. Back to how it was would be wonderful.

I'm back with the specialist on the 16th, will find out what he wants to do next then I guess. I'm looking forward to getting the chance to ask him lots of questions I have; but dreading it incase there is more laser to come anytime soon.
C'est la vie!

I am sure that your sight will improve -it just takes a while. Even if they were two sessions of inense laser you shoud recover,
I can't even remember how much laser I have had .
Laser alone never worked for me - I had o have injections frst o dry up the fluid -operating theatre stuff and hen laser so it took a few months before any result would show up.

Over the last five years of my treatment I have had many ups and downs but have had to learn paience.

I have fond that if you don't get all the answers you want its because they don' know. hey can't predict the future so are someimes non-commital which can appear o be evasive. My eyes always took a long time to settle after laser weeks or even momths.
I would be very surprised if wo sessions had caused any permanenet damage .
Especially as you are T1. Well there has o be some advantage hasn' there?

I was like you in never requirng spectacles. My close vision was esed in the beginning and was perfect. It isn't now but hat is supposed to be di=ue to some underling weakness. Its unusual.
I hope it all turns out well for you - I am sure it will but patience is often necessary. You learn a lot sitting ouside the Consultants door on a regular basis over several years.!

Went for my check up with the specialist today. He'd not heard of people's depth perception being affected post laser surgery before, but said it certainly seemed that it was the laser that has caused it and that in time my brain should adapt to changes in my eyes.

Good news is that he's happy with the right eye (the one previously treated) for now; Bad news, I now need laser on my left eye. Appointment should be in 4-6 weeks time. I was expecting to hear this, as I can see spots in my vision. But was still kind of hoping not to get this news two days before my birthday. :(

Hi Hooked, good the right eye is doing well. Try not to worry about having laser on the left eye. I had a lot of laser last year and when they had to laser my 'good' eye I felt like I had failed. But now, it has stabilised and I have come to see the laser as a positive thing as it is protecting my eye from further vessel damage. I even had top up laser privately (not available on NHS) to enable me to go through a pregnancy, as the eye would be further protected from the triggers that cause the blood vessel growth.
The real downside with having laser on both eyes is that you will need to do a field test for the dvla, and then (usually) every 3 years another one to get your license renewed, unless it has deteriorated rapidly. I worried enormously about this but as it was I was fine. Despite 6 sessions on one eye and 4 on the other, and retinal damage to the left eye from an operation, I could still see all the points on the field test (with both eyes open -and luckily god gave us 2) and passed with flying colours. I'm hopeful now that my eyes have both stabilised and will have no further need for laser. To be honest I wish they had lasered my left eye earlier than they did as it may have stopped the rapid progression of retinopathy in that eye which led to a bad bleed and vitrectomy a year ago. But it all seems ok now and without the laser I'd certainly have gone blind in one if not both eyes by now. Many people have a substantial amount of laser on one or both eyes and then that's the end of it and they can get on with their lives.

Thanks for your reply. It's good to hear from someone who has been through it and come out the other side with decent vision.

Thanks for sharing.
