diabetes due to Prograf drug after a kidney Transplant

hi all
My name is Tracey, I am new to the Forum and to diabetes. I am 5 weeks post op from a kidney Transplant and the last week have bin told i am diabetic due to the anti-rejection meds i am taking. They have me on Gliclazide 80mg (two half tablets twice a day) and told me to have a low sugar diet. Everything seams to have sugar in!! i was a fittness instructor before i had renal failure so know a little on how the body converts carbs, fats and proteins to sugars. I have been trying very hard to get my levels down but just seam to be getting no where.

Is there anyone else on here with this type of diabetes? that can help me pls. Or indeed any advise i would be very greatful of. I have now got myself a glucose testing machine, and tried some of the diabetic biscuits and chocs from boots but not only did they send my sugars sky high they gave me the runs, which is very bad for a transplanted kidney. Im feeling very down about it at the moment my family eat puddings, biscuits, cakes, in front of me and im finding it so hard to resist. I wasnt on any diet restrictions while on dialysis. Now it seams i cant eat anything.

Thank you for you time

Hi there

I did a little digging on that prograf drug you mentioned and one of the main side effects is insulin dependant diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes. Seems some pretty heavy duty drugs for the kidney. Will start with what I know first of all. Dont touch diabetic foods or chocolate. Most will give you the runs due to the suger alternatives they use. Like the old suger free polos used to do. Just stick to diet juice and small portions of any main meals your getting.

If your still getting the runs after eating normally then its possible the Gliclizide may be a factor as I could not handle that or metformin when I was placed onto them. Not to worry the long acting Gliclizide called Diamicron MR is very tummy friendly if that is found to be the cause.

I am going to be needing a Kidney transplant within the next 5-7 years as its on its way out so I can see you have been through a type of reverse here and ended up with diabetes after it. Life can be harsh sometimes and having diabetes can certainly get you down when you see others eating lots of chocolate. What I do is never say no I will have a bit of cake or a choclate etc as long as I test before hand and im not sky high. The main thing is just to take a smaller piece as I found it allot harder when denying myself things I always loved. There a few different options with regards to dieting etc. Some here seem to enjoy a low carb diet that they find helps to get the blood sugers down a bit easier. However if your levels dont seem to be coming down much after a week or 2 it may just be your needing some extra help with regards to the meds you are on. So it's always best to just speak to your consultant or doctor and tell them what's going on.

Have a look around the forums and ask any questions you can think of :D

Thank you so much for replying that was very useful info indeed. I go back to the Transplant clinic on Fri so will mention whats been happening. I am down to see the dietician next week but its not the same as talking to those that live with it.

Please if i can help you with anything regarding Kidney Transplant dont hesitate to ask. I have been through just about every complication going since the op, including rejection but im starting to move forward now. Can i ask are you nearing Dialysis stage yet? PM me if you like.
