Type 1 Diabetic neuropathy

Hello @alphabeta what symptoms are you experiencing and where ?

It's generally thought that it cannot be reversed as it's nerve tissue damage, but there are treatments/medication available which can help.

Numbness in left foot. I had bad control recently for few months. It hurts when i stand up. If I gain better control can it become better?

I take it you haven't had a medical diagnosis for this ? If so then it would be best to consult your doctor and get a diagnosis for this first before speculating, it may not even be related to diabetes so getting checked out is important.

I agree with @Juicyj that you should check with a doctor, that it is diabetes related, and not caused by something else, as you are fairly young to start developing complications.

However, there are a number of people who believe complications can be reversed, and improving blood sugar control, even if it doesn't reverse, will at least stop anything getting any worse.

If you do find the numbness in your foot is neuropathy caused by diabetes, as well as better glucose management it's worth having a look at your diet, try to make sure you get lots of antioxidants in your diet, fruit and veg are good for this, and vitamin c, in particular, is a good nerve protector.

There have been a number of people on this website who have said that they reversed this, and the sooner you deal with it the better, good luck.

My appointment is in November 9. Will do!

What could it be?

I did a google of possible reasons for numbness in foot, there is a possibility of an injury, but reading all the other things, neuropathy is almost the least worse, there are a few quite nasty things there.

I think you need to check, just in case, and as you have a doctor's appointment on November 9th, that will do fine.

I think it is none. I just woke up from a nap, sugar is lower than pre prandial ( 12.2 vs 16.4) but the numbness is gone! I don't know maybe I panicked!

Could be your mind playing tricks with you, but do definitely get it cheked out.

Also remember than neuropathy is not a guaranteed side effect of a couple of months of dodgy blood sugars, if it was, given some of my past bad control I'd be numb all over (that doesn't mean you can completely ignore it and you should try and keep your control as good as you can, but don't blame every numb-ness on neuropathy)

What are you saying? Neuropathy is a side effect of years of bad control?

No, what I was meaning is that it is not a guaranteed side effect of bad control, because if it was I'd have neuropathy by now, though obviously if you have bad control then you will more likely to get it, but I guess I must have been lucky.
