Hi everyone
It has been quite sometime since I have been on here ☹️
I am in need of help/advice kick up the backside!
So I had a small reverse window back in 2023 got hba1c to 40. I had lost a couple of stone and felt really quite good. My gallbladder had been removed in the march before much of the weight loss. I was never told by the hospital about foods etc.
Anyway the short of it is I also suffer with binge eating disorder for which I have had some therapy. I now have gained weight have bad liver function and hba1c is back up from 40 to 55 and I’m faced with uncertainty on what foods would suit. I understand the low carb way of eating which I successfully did but I now have to have low fat too. I think it is because of no gallbladder. I’m always hungry craving carbs and sugar to which I give in.
Does anyone have a similar story where they have now succeeded in a better eating life or any help advice would be much appreciate.
Im not ready to give up I want to become a better me.

Thank you for reading

Are you sure you have to eat low fat?

The general advice after getting rid of your gallbladder is to go a bit slow with the fats at first and then eat as normal. Most people do perfectly fine on higher fat diets without a gall bladder.
I've never avoided fats after mine was taken out, and once I got diagnosed with diabetes I changed my diet to a low carb and higher fat one, works well for me.

Totally agree with @Antje77 here - my wife had hers out - it's just a storage pouch for bile, not the means of production.
In any event, the issue with lack of bile is that you don't absorb as much nutrient from fat as you might, it doesn't become a problem.
The sugar is what is driving the behaviour you don't want.
And any starch that will turn into sugar.
As you have noted, low carb and low fat is just starvation, so that isn't an option, but try making slow changes and see how you feel.

Intermittent fasting may also be a tool that you can use, some like it, some don`t - but it's a super-powerful way of taking control.

I'm finding some surprising success with making bullet-proof coffee... so think coffee with a (tea) spoon of butter and cream and coconut oil - but then blend it.
Sounds horrendous, tastes surprisingly good, and fills you for the entire morning and well into the afternoon.

There are lots of ways to deal with this...

The "what can I eat" is often the simpler part when compared to the "why do I eat" (and give in to cravings etc)
There's loads of podcasts and YouTube talks out there about quitting sugar where they work on the mindset as well as the food.
Some of the American ones can be a bit too zealous for my more tempered ideals , some also just wantt you to buy into programmes or supplements but soem good places to start are
Quit Sugar Coach
Kick Sugar Coach
Real Health and medicine (2 Australian lady doctors, very practical)
Or try Jen Unwin, wife of Dr Unwin who has books and websites looking at the psychological side.
Hope this helps, I find the what to eat easy but struggle with stopping eating the stuff I know I shouldn't

I’m another type 2 without a gall bladder. I had it removed years before I became diabetic. I strangely wasn’t advised to eat low fat afterwards, in fact I was eating bacon sandwiches the first day post op. Today I would still have bacon sandwiches but the bread would be low carb!
I guess what I’m trying to say, give low carb with normal fat a go and see how you feel on it.

Thank you for your replies. Chris24main I think you are right about sugar driving my eating behaviours. I’ve read that having no gallbladder I should have bile salts or something. Just need to get control of my eating as don’t really want to have T2 meds.

My gallbladder was removed 15 years ago and I've never needed anything.
Do you have symptoms that make you feel something is off because of the gallbladder?

It might depend on the person, whether or not you can tolerate fats. My brother in law had his gall bladder removed a few years ago, he eats fats, no problem. In fact he eats a diet high in fats. A friend of mine had her gall bladder out a few years back and cannot tolerate fats at all. It doesn’t stop her eating them, she just can’t be that far from a bathroom.

No not really I just had been reading about it and because my liver function is elevated probably too much fat and alcohol. No drinking is easy nearly 3 weeks now without , but I got complacent about what I was eating and sluggish gut.

Hi Gillsmaad,

I have been on a low very low carb/high fat diet for 2.5 months. My a1c is at a 7 as of last week down from 12 three months ago. I have lost 30 pounds and still losing. My issue was not so much a weight issue but the loss does not hurt me and another 15-20 pounds loss would just make a slim guy. I do not have a galbladder and so far that has not been an issue eating the fatty foods, this being said I had my gallbladder taken out years ago and I think my liver has adjusted to not having it. I did however switch my oil of choice for cooking and so on to MCT oil about a month ago. MCT bypasses the liver and the galbladder when being digested.
