Hello,
This is difficult for me !!!
Last Year I was dagnosed with type 2 diabetes, unfortunately this news was told me when I was suffering from medium to severe depression. I also lost both my Father and youngest sister within a year of each other. In 2004 I suffered a Myocardial Infarction and had a stent fitted, (hence the depression) I also have kidney disfunction.
Therefore I initially was in a state of denial regarding my diabetes and it is only recently I found this site and read with horror and terror at what damage diabetes can do. The problem I have is that I comfort eat usually chocolate, cakes, biscuits and I guess loads of carbohydrates.I am currently taking Metformin 2x500mg and 80mg of Gliclazide daily. I have tied to cut out the choc, cakes etc and can usually go a week without these items ten I binge. I do not know how to stop myself. Is there any advice you can offer me. I would be very grateful for any ideas.
Kindest Regards

Hi Brian, and welcome to the forum,You've got a lot on your plate there!!I think we all head for comfort food in times of stress. How about changing your comfort foods to something more diabetic friendly? Nuts for instance.Once you get passed the craving for sweet stuff then things like nuts are a lot better for you.(providing there is not a nut allergy, obviously!)
If you do nor buy these things and have them in the house then ,when the urge comes and they are not to hand try and go do something else,If you were a woman I'd suggest a long, relaxing bath, don't quite know if that works for men the same!!Or try and eat things that do not have carbs such as cheese, cold meats, etc. What sort of situations make you comfort eat? Maybe avoiding these may help although that's easier said than done. Don't know if any of this helps but your are not alone now.You have got the forum members here to help you.We understand a lot of what you are going through because we have all been there at one time or another.

Hi Brianphilip

fistly welcome to the forum

Theres no easy answer to your question, but hopefully there will be lots of suggestions that might help you out..

Heres one for starters

You say that you binge to a certain extent and you can reframe for a week, but then return to old habbits?

I suspect that this might be just a little too much for the body to come to terms with, have you thought of instead of going for it gun hole style, that you slowly cut back over a period of time, if you set yourself a daily max limit, the over several weeks, reduce this amount until you comfortably get down to not wanting or missing them... You would need to replace some of the food with low or none carb foods to be effective though... Even when snacking, instead of having all you normally have have part bad and part good (low/none carb) subitute instead..

Well take longer to achieve, but hopefully spending slightly longer sorting it might actually lead to the changes on a perment bases that you need.

Can I just ask if you have a partner who although might not be diabetic you can at least talk to?
