They are in the pay of the drug companies. They must be,otherwise the would tell their patients about cinnamon and cis-oils etc etc.

...you also have a chance of beng led down the garden path or along another dangerous route! Be advised - the web has information on what has worked for others - may not work for you and certain meds may work against others....thats why docs are paid so much!!! They know this, we dont.
I think the web is useful for experiences but to suggest the buck stops with you is dangerous - surely you should still take advse from medical trained people, not just people on here, homopathic (sp?) folk or anyone else that has carried out their own prescriptions?
Not having a go at all, just take some things with a pinch of salt!
Its like saying chromium can provide a miracle stabiliser for blood sugar control - it can also damage your kidneys to the extent of it being lifethreatening.
Just be careful.

Bonerp, I strongly agree with you re. alternative therapies such as homeopathy. When rigorously tested, these bullcrap therapies show no effect higher than placebos. I find it intensely irritating that much of this charlatanism is funded by the NHS when proven treatments are being rationed due to cost constraints, nurses are being laid off and hospital wards are closed.

It's sad but true. Why can't they be more helpful? I think it is great we can learn from people who are actually going through diabetes now. Maybe doctors just can't relate until they have gone through it themselves.:|

Sarah,
I totally agree with you. Having had type 1 for over 30 yrs myself, and now having complications as retinopathy, I also think the support from the NHS is lacking.
However - and this was more aimd at newbies rather than the comments you made, many new diagnosed diabetics come on here confused, looking for help and suddenly read a snippet about some wonder drug or herb that simply may not work safely.
This is what people have to be careful about as if there is a group here that supports the latest weed maybe even the newly (confused and sometimes depressed) diagnosed reading something that works for a type 2 but they themselves are type 1, this is dangerous, and this is where medics can help and support you.

OK we may only get to see a doc once a year - every time I go to the Great Western Hospital in Swindon I see a different doc/trainee/lospam!!!! But at least I can see a specialist nurse more regularly. OK they may not have the answer but at least I can bounce ideas off of them.

I would always be interested in discussion and learnings from sites like this, but you have to take it with a pinch of salt and look for backed up evidence by your health care professionals.

As a doctor I find some of the above comments are puerile. However, I know which GPs in my practise to avoid.

Remember, early type 2 diabetes is seen (by most of society)as a lifestyle effect. Too many calories and not enough exercise. I think it is a chicken and egg scenario. Too many chickens and too many eggs. Or is is too many eggs before too many chickens? Our GPs have limited time and effect to tell us what we already know. Type 1 is seen as less self induced so there is a bit more sympathy. GPs and nurses seem to forget the deeply involved genetic contribution in type 2 (much more so than Type 1)

So to start with it is bewildering. I was diagnosed last year in DKA and started off on metformin and insulin. even with a wee bit of inside knowledge it still is largely self taught and a bit of personal experimentation.

My hospital doctors are looking after my complications, however my diabetic nurses really guide me with my day to day care. I think they are brill. But you have to take it on yourself.

bonerp i would like to clarify that it isnt the new wonderful cure and magic potions that i have learned from on here but just the understanding that there are more people like me out there having the same issues which has helped me come to terms with diabetes. yes i am new and confused but not young and naive looking for a magical cure that will rid me off this.

Hi everyone.

I don't think I get much help from my consultant. Diagnosed type 1 a year ago now, have seen consultant twice and he just says see how things go! My blood sugars were quite low at the time, between 2 and 5? I have never seen an optician or chiropodist either, must make appointments today. I know you should look after yourself but doctors should be checking that we are having these appointments.

I've got to admit that I have had good service from my local surgery - although never ever seen a doctor since type 2 diagnosis over a year ago!! The practice nurse has been helpful, had 2 retinal scans already, chiropodist, dietician . . . . . free meter, strips. All great

BUT - I've learnt more about what I can practically do to help control my BG levels - beyond eating a lot less chickens and eggs - from this site. And one book - diabetes for dummies.

Still got a lot to learn - and frankly feel I'll get the knowledge from the likes of here rather than from doctors.
