Hi can anyone explain what an MJ is? I am type 1 diabetic with stage4/5 kidney disease and being considered for a kidney & pancreas transplant. I saw the transplant surgical team and in a follow up letter it states that he "cautioned me that I may well need an MJ at the time of transplantation and an NJ insertion at the time of operation". I understand about the Nasojejunal (NJ) tube but I don't remember anything about an MJ being mention?. My GFR is at 13% and my urea is at 15. Does anybody on here know if there a certain level when dialysis start? It is something that has never been discussed. I know there are no set rules and everyone is different but my consultant is not the most understanding or informative. Any info would be greatly welcomed. :D

Hi Sugar Pie,
Good luck with everything! I had no luck finding what an MJ was (I couldn't get past marajuana, which I'm certain they are not suggesting!! ) but I did find a guideline document about starting dialysis. It recommends definitely starting before a GFR of 6 but in Diabetes it recommends starting at about or below 15. However it seems your specialist has to weigh up what symptoms you have with what complications you might have. It also seems to suggest but the earlier the better. Anyway, here is the link to the guideline, I hope it helps.

Thanks for the relies and thanks Rhaja for the link. I am back at my local renal clinic at the end of next week so hopefully they can unravel the code. I will update with the findings. :D
