This is possibly a very stupid question but....

You know when you are waiting 2 hours from eating in order to test your blood sugar? Will drinking tea or coffee (no sugar, some milk) affect the result? Should I not have a drink between meals unless its water?

I have some kidney issues and am supposed to drink lots.

You should drink lots and not worry about when especially if you have kidney problems.

I drink lots of tea and coffee and diet coke, probably average around 2 to 3 pints a day. I don't count the carbs in the milk at all. I know they're there but just ignore them. They don't seem to effect my BG's at all whenever I drink and even if they did it's more important to keep hydrated as that will help lower your BG's anyway.

So drink away whenever you want to.

Hi Lucy,

It's worth remembering that caffinated coffee and tea can affect blood glucose levels in some people (it can cause increases), and that only 100mls of milk contains 5gs of carbs. Depends how much tea you're drinking between meals I suppose.

It might be worth doing a couple of 'spot-checks' just to see if it is having an effect, and maybe switching to de-caff or herbal tea, don't cut down on your fluid intake if you've kidney problems though.

:D

Just did my 2 hours-after-eating test.

Had a slice wholemeal toast, butter, teaspoonful of honey spread on it. I drank medium mug coffee made with semi-skimmed milk and 1 teaspoonful of sugar. (I hate the taste of sweeteners)

My nurse says this is an OK lunch/light meal.

my Blood sugar level is 8.2 which doesnt sound so good to me. It was 6.5 last night.

I have only just started testing as my nurse and doctor are dead against it, so I bought my own meter. I had a bit of a problem with using the lancet, I didnt set the depth and really hurt my finger, but I think I have got the hang of it now.

Hi. I guess you know that the honey and sugar in the drink are going to push your BS up a bit as they are high-GI carbs. The toast would only have been around 12gm carbs. It's up to you but if you want to get below the magic 7.0 then it's worth considering the options e.g. reduced sugar jam or similar instead of honey and there are now many different sweeteners; have you tried them all? Every little helps as they say.
