Green Veg due to IBS.
I am getting very confused. Is the diet safe for diabetes ?

I am Type 2 using 1G of Metformin twice a day and Victoza to control my sugars.

Last HBA1c 5.6 Fasting Glucose 5.3.

I am reading the dukan book and all looks ok except I am scared about cutting out all the carbs. I know that normally if I am Carb free I crash.

Has anyone tried this diet ?

Thanks in advance.

I tried it - I found it really hard. I've lo-carbed for years, but Dukan banishes pretty much all fat from his diet.

I found that I was ALWAYS hungry (I mean HUNGRY) on the Dukan Diet. It also made me constipated... :x

Lovely.

I've not tried it and I have no intention of loading my system with that much protein and at the same time elimination so much fat....I would also be very wary of constipation... nothing worse than bum-block!

I also have problems with IBS so live with bad "runs" all the time so a Bit of "Bum Block2 wont be such a bad think :D. I am just worried about the carb withdrawal. I eat very a healthy diet and walk the dog for at least 1hr a day. Still my weight will not go down !

Low Fat, mix of fruit and veg. All the "safe foods" brown bread, brown rice etc... My wife is very strict with what she cooks.

It might all 'sound' healthy but from my own experience the things you mention that would all be high carb foods which can mean that they are not suitable for losing weight. I put on stones eating the so called 'healthy NHS / Heart healthy diet........it was only by reducing the carb intake overall that I then started to lose weight by the bucketful........over 5 1/2 stone to date without really trying too hard. :)

Take a good look at the Basic Advice for Newly Diagnosed Diabetic's that Sue and I post in the Greetings and Introductions thread.......it not only helps to lower Bg levels but can help if you have some weight to lose.

I think Dukan Diet is good, but not recommended for diabetics, because I think it is very burdensome to the body and increase physical activity is a better option.

Hi guys,
I am 25 type 1 and want to/need to lose a stone to have a healthy BMI. I've found that the Dukan diet does work for weight loss but am worried about the effect on my kidneys - is being in ketosis for long periods damaging to kidneys? I've kept an eye on ketone levels and they were very up and down. I tried to go for a run once and felt dizzy and sick - apparently exercising when there are ketones present is not good.
Would welcome any advice?
Thanks

Ask your diabetes consultant if ketosis is damaging to the kidneys, my own consultant is of the opinion that it is damaging and deters anyone from following such diets.

The Dukan Diet is 'appearing 'in the French Courts this week.
Dr Dukan is sueing Dr Cohen another diet guri for libel. Dr Cohen made remarks about the diet in a French magazine.

rough translation: from http://vasram.doomby.com/rubrique,regim ... 73570.html
"Dr. Cohen criticized his method in the magazine Meilleure Santé.The practitioner had stated that the Dukan diet had been in fact developed in the 50s, by a Dr. Pennington "The goal is to consume excessive protein and therefore saturated fats and trans fatty acids. This is a destruction of the diet, (I think it means that the diet is bad for eating habits, something very important to the French, but not sure!) , it causes severe health problems in some patients as a sharp rise in cholesterol , heart problems, stroke, breast cancer, "explained Jean-Michel Cohen. Asked by the reporter who it benefitted he replied: "the weight loss industry , doctors, vendors of pills, publishing, newspapers ... Everyone searches for the fantasy diet. "

At the end of last week a survey was also released in which 50% of respondents said they had regained weight lost with diet within 6 months to a year and 70% had regained it within 3-4years. The link above also has a link to the full survey,

Both Cohen's and Dukan's diets were found to have several deficiences (as did the other diets studied in an official French report recently (both for example had too much sodium, too little fibre and too little Vit C, )
It will be interesting to see what happens. Apparently the burden of proof for defamation is much lower in the French courts than in the UK. The settlements are also smaller.

The criticisms are the same old criticisms aimed at all ketogenic diets.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/ma ... NTCMP=SRCH

Dr Boris Hansel, a metabolism and cardiovascular system specialist at the Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital, in Paris, said: "The diet is not a long-term success because it does not meet our body's needs.

"There are real risks … infertility, sleep apnoea, high blood pressure, type-two diabetes, liver disease or cardiovascular problems. Following this diet is not harmless; it could cause real health problems," he told Le Parisien newspaper.

I read with interest the risks given I've been following a ketogenic diet for 5 years or so. I have had the exact opposite experience. Rather than deterioration in health I've positively blossomed! I've always been fertile so no problem there. Sleep apnoea, which I had suffered for 10+ years vanished within weeks of going ketogenic. Blood pressure normalised after years of hypertension. Reversal of type-two diabetes, maintained Hba1cs in the low fives all this time. Reversal of fatty liver disease. No kidney problems. 9st weight loss. Improved mood, previously had a history of mild depression. Cholesterol levels were never too bad for me but they improved and triglycerides annihilated.

I wonder where these 'experts' get their info, it must be just the same misinformation being rehashed over and over.

Ah but of course this is purely anecdotal. My blood tests showing all my improvements clearly don't matter. I must have a completely different physiological set up to the average person.

Does 5 years count as long term? Probably not

EDIT: Just saw Patch's post about it being very low fat too. i doubt that I could follow that diet and I'd have concerns about being able to take in fat soluble vitamins. Hmmm probably isn't sustainable long term then.

Ignore my post.

In response to the original question - I tried it and it worked. Had to stop when I became pregnant. Baby is 3 months old and I'm pleased to find that I'm back to the weight I was before the baby, without dieting in any way, so no regain of the weight that I originally lost.

I would say, like most diets, it's not for everyone. It certainly is very extreme and honestly quite difficult to manage in terms of eating out or eating with friends. Before I tried it I tried Dr Bernstein's approach and am totally sold on the low carb idea. Planning to give either Dukan or Bernstien another go as soon as my health care peeps allow me (it's been a bit soon after the baby right now!).

I started the Dukan in Feb2011. Lost 2 stone very quickly, (2 months). I am now on a plateau at about 15 stone, (5 ft 11") large frame! 5oomg Metformin/day. All bloods/sugars good levels.

However - I can go out for a 'proper' sunday lunch, staying away from desserts, (except for the occasional cheese board), and get back to my plateau easily by being Dukan strict. Same on holiday - eat sensibly (off Dukan), accept that a few pounds will accumulate; enjoy the time away from Dukan; but go back and lose the extra in a week or so.

My take of the diet - good for meat-eaters.

My philosophy at 59? Enjoy life, accept the limits and live to them!
