I'm type 2 and waking up (thankfully) to go to the toilet 3/4 times per night. I have a cup of tea before bedtime with biscuits. I also have a piece of fruit in the evening. The toilet problem is getting me down, any suggestions?

Your loo problems are probably caused by the amount of sugar you are consuming during the evening/before bed. Sugar = needing a wee.

Most kinds of fruit contain a lot of sugar... And biscuits?! I don't think biscuits are a good idea if you are type 2, ESPECIALLY before sleeping.

Lastly, I would leave a fair amount of time between your last drink and bed.

Last summer, before I went on a low(ish) carb diet my blood sugar was pretty high. HBA1C in July was 8.9. I had to get up during the night 3 or 4 times (occasionally 5 or 6!!) to go to the loo and it was getting me down too. At the beginning of September, I went on the diet and my weight fell quite a bit (about 3.5 stone) by Xmas. My blood sugars are down too, but not as far yet as I want - HBA1C in October was 6.7. I now don't need to get up during the night for the loo and can sleep through.

For a while at least, you might have to bite the bullet - but forget about biting biscuits or anything with much in the way of carbs in it. Lose the sugar, biscuits, cakes, bread, ice cream, milk, pasta, rice, potatoes and any fruit that doesn't end in "berry".

Hi. You don't say what your current Hba1C or BS level is? Do you have a meter to enable you to find out which foods affect you? Before diagnosis I used to go to the loo many times a night but this has now been reduced to about normal. I avoid a drink anywhere near bedtime and I avoid too much fruit too late in the evening. Biscuits are a no-no - sorry! I assume you don't have any added sugar in your drink?

Yeah I agree, I think it's the sugar you're taking in that's making you go to the loo. It also makes it worse because you're not moving about whilst sleeping, so it will hang around.

Yes it sounds like you've had remarkably poor advice as to what you can safely eat as a Type 2 diabetic. Biscuits and fruit before bedtime!?!   Have the VERY real risks of continuing to eat those kind of things ever been explained to you? As others are saying you need to consider testing your blood sugars so that you can see what is safe to eat. If you want advice on diet then just ask. There are loads of forum members who will be more than happy to help you.

It could be your age too! My BG is NEVER high, but I get up at least once a night

Heck ....no.one has ever told me not to eat fruit. i eat fruit most evenings after my meal. Thought it was good for me!! :?: :(

Sorry Keith should have been a bit more explicit.

I find fruit depends on how much you eat and when you eat it. I eat a small amount of whateverberries in the morning mixed with a bit of yoghurt. The wife makes up fresh fruit salad out of a whole range of fruits (apples, oranges, melon and whatever else we have). If I eat 150g of that with my main evening meal as pud it doesn't tend to touch my blood sugars. If I ate it by itself then BOOM.

So fruit is ok in small amounts. Most biscuits are high carb / high sugar and unless it was a special occasion I just wouldn't eat them, far too dangerous.
