Many of us struggle to exercise for a myriad of different reasons, yet we all know exercise does help. I do gentle walking, quite a slow speed but it works for me.

This thread is for those of us who do struggle sometimes. I know encouragement makes such a huge difference.

Thank you for starting this thread :D

I am having physio on my knees so i struggle to walk. But I am not a exercise fan at the best of times.

I think I may have been a cat in a previous life.

Hello,

I've just started on Interval training as can do it at home and too scared to go on a proper run until I'm in better control. On the plus side commiting to exercise and better diet is something I've never done and the results are astounding. I've always been slim and out of shape. I've now got abs for the first time! I'm not sure if my wife is impressed or annoyed as she now feels like she needs to exercise. :problem:

The best thing though? After exercise if I push it I can eat like a normal human being with no BG catastrophes!

Other supposed benefit, especially if type 2 is that its supposed to improve Insulin sensitivity? As a type 1 not sure how much that will help me as I think I'm still OK on that.

We all have some degree of insulin resistance (or perhaps you could say sometimes we are more insulin sensitive than others) it varies from day to day and life stage , hormonal fluctuations, whether we put on a few pounds etc.
If I don't exercise for a couple of days my fasting levels increase, longer and I start to need more insulin with meals.
A few years back there was a young woman on a US forum who trained and did ultramarathons (up to 100km). She needed to take hardly any insulin when she was at the peak of her mileage.

We all need encouragement. I know how much exercise helps me and have done some long runs but it is sometimes very very hard to get out of the front door or onto the treadmill.
I feel better afterwards though; those endorphins work for me.

This afternoon, we're going out for a 10km walk with a walking group. It's the first dry day for ages so it's going to be very muddy... I've written it here so I won't shy off at the last minute (cross your fingers the heavens don't open again)

Loving this thread.

I have a problem with my right knee. It clicks out of place so walking is the only thing for me. However I bought the Davina Mcall mini bike ( from Argos £34.99 not too much money ) and you can use it for your stomach and arms. I need to get using it again. I have lost 1st and 1/2 since last summer. I live in the country so have to drive my son to school but even parking as far away from the school as poss, and litttle things help!!

Nice to consider people who have some restrictions and ideas to help those of our community who are less mobile!

Lucy.

soaps on telly and people talking about the characters as if they were real.
I agree on exercise. I does help. I had a stroke and decided to try exercise to retrain my brain and get back most of my muscle function. It's worked about 90%. I still lack a bit of fine motor control.
Exercise in groups is a great way to socialise. I belong to a group at my leisure centre and attend 6 classes most weeks, 3 in the pool , plus I belong to a health Walk group.
this week it's all in abeyance, because I've got a chesty cough and cold.
It's enhanced my social life as well as my fitness, which is good for my psychological well-being.

I've been going out for walks around town, as I live in the town centre. At first I just managed 10 minutes a day and wasn't very disciplined about going. Over the past few days I've got it up to half an hour. I also bought a secondhand aerobic step and if I do it carefully (to avoid knee twinges) can manage 40 steps at a time.

People who think they are always right and ram their opinions down your throat. No-one knows everything. Those who shout loudest are usually the ones who actually know the least.
Well done Apple! You're on the way now :D

I'm the same as Hanadr. I had a stroke and used exercise to get my balance back and rehab myself. I started using the Wii Fit to get my balance inside and then progressed to short distances outside. Then I set myself targets of distance. I almost danced home the day I managed to get up the not very steep hill without stopping. That was a real breakthrough for me. I exercise 45 minutes to an hour after eating which serves a double purpose - gets me fit and burns back my sugar levels. As I got used to walking and increased the distance, I started doing workouts on the Wii using various programmes which means that as well as losing weight I've toned myself up. I like to exercise and walk on my own because I don't want to be distracted from it. I meet various people walking in couples or groups when I'm out walking and they seem to be more interested in chatting than exercising. It's too serious a matter for me to do that. I'm now walking 2-3 miles after breakfast in the mornings and then working out for an hour in the evening on the Wii. If I'm not working then I'll exercise after lunch as well. I'm down from a size 22-24 to a size 10 jeans and size 12 top.

I'm about 96-97% back from my stroke. I still lurch to the left and have reduced sensation on my left side and am always covered in bruises down my left side and I have a slight limp which is much worse when I'm tired and my foot drags a bit unless I seriously concentrate. If I close my eyes I cannot keep my balance and sway horribly. I have good days and bad days, but I'm really very very lucky because things could have been much worse and I'm determined never to have another stroke.

Hmmm exercise and me were never good friends... but i do know the positive effects it can have.

At the time being the one regular thing is my bellydancing class once a week.... i tell you...it is knackering but good fun!
When the weather decides to stop chucking down rain, me and my colleagues will start our short walk at lunchtime. I never used to go with them but decided to start when we had the nice spell in March (anyone remembers that  ). It is only about 20 mins but better than zilch.

I also was treated to a WII fit plus and the board for Christmas. I just need to get more consistent in using it. I do like it because 1) it is at home 2) it is fun so you dont feel like you are working out 3) i am always trying to beat my own scores. And yes i know this might sound as an excuse but sometimes it is difficult to work, try and have a life, keep up with cleaning, cooking, and other stuff that all needs doing after work etc....

I hadn't exercised for years and years, and it was Geordie from the weight loss forum who advised me that along with the Newcastle diet, exercise was vital. I decided that I would buy a treadmill, as classes and groups were not really an option (or so I thought). I just do gentle walking, usually watching something funny on youtube and the time passes very quickly. I can now manage an hour a day, spread out into sections.

When I was young, I was a long distance swimmer, and runner, and used to ride. When I look back from now to then, it almost seems impossible. I am going to start swimming again soon, and going to the gym with someone. If I can get reasonably fit, I am sure it helps not only bodily but mentally as well.

Come on guys and girls, little by little we can all get fitter, and have some fun into the bargain.

and so say ALL of us. I am quite determined about this, even though I HATE every second of it. It MUST be doing me some good ultimately!

Just between you and me :shh:  I think people who enjoy exercise are very strange indeed. However, I shall try to smile while really gritting my teeth, and really make an effort. I wouldn't mind belly dancing like Clay, or zumba in the future, if my old joints will allow, but I am not hopping bumping and grinding all over the place waving my arms looking very silly. If that means in the future I get bingo wings (unbelievably I don't have them yet) so be it.

Ok folks, I need an ass kick. I am so cold, I am wrapped up like a pass the parcel package, more layers than and onion, and still freezing. I need a kick to get me on the treadmill.
