I was diagnosed with having type 2 after my first pregnancy when I had gestational diabetes. I can’t get motivated to change my diet and lose weight. I have to do it for my health I’m only 26 I’m on 2 metformin tablets a day. I don’t see how they been helping me I got a check up appointment on 5 of feb so will see what doctor says. I just feel alone in this like my family don’t understand what I’m going through I just want to be strong and stop moaning cause I have to deal with this I’ve been in denial for over a year.

Hi @ShyLily Can you ask to see a dietitian to get some help ? they should be able to give you some guidance in changing your diet or how about joining slimming world and so you would meet others with the same goal in mind and get some support ?

You’re in good company here ShyLily. I was diagnosed Type 2 last May. I’m on Metformin too and it does help but only a tiny bit. What kind of diet do you eat now? And do you know your HbA1c? And do you monitor your blood sugars at home? Sorry for all the questions but it’ll help us help you.
I embarked on a low carb diet on diagnosis, 100g per day to begin with, then dropped to between 50-70g per day. My blood sugars are normal now and my HbA1c is non diabetic, due to the help and support from this Forum. I’ve lost a shed load of weight easily and feel so much better. I didn’t realise how poorly I felt till I started to feel better!
Come here for support, we’ll understand, we are all going through it too.
Don’t forget you need to keep healthy not just for your own sake but for your children xx

My question would also be do you test your blood sugars at home?

If it is motivation you need to restrict those carbs and keep to a sensible eating plan that will help you control blood sugars and lose weight, then testing before and 2 hours after a meal to see what that meal has done to your levels is an excellent motivator. Actually seeing how much certain foods raise your levels may shock you out of denial. It works for many of us, and it sure works for me! Recording these levels alongside a detailed food diary is also an enormous help.

Hey shylily.
Your never alone on here, there's always help available or just people to listen.
Try taking little steps day by day, week by week and then it will be more of a boost mentally and rewarding.
It's not a sprint finish to the line, see it as a marathon.
You have to chip away at the start of your journey, ie slowly find out what you can and can't get away with eating, watch the foods that spike your levels by monitoring and testing. Read the labels on food products, reduce the amount of sugar you eat. Change and alter your diet as much as you can, the more modification you make to this the faster the results in dropping your levels over time.
You can start to exercise gradually, like a walk to local shops, walk round town or just round where you live. Exercise after meals if possible in whatever shape or form, it does helps lower levels and digestion. Slowly increase your exercise rate it will help, you dont have to be as fit as Usain Bolt to start of with. Just proactive, small changes at first.

If you need more advice or help, ask your doctor/surgery nurse, or on here as people's pass on a world of information that has helped them achieve lowering their blood sugar levels.

You have to tell yourself, you can do this, step by step, day by day.

You take control not it control you.

Where all here to help you, your part of one big community now.

I used to but I stopped I’m starting again. I used to be strict in my pregnancy so I don’t know why I’m being so lazy now. I just can’t accept that I have it can’t get over it no one else in my family has diabetes so it’s been really hard for me and the fact that I’m young I just feel like why is this happening to me I know I sound like a baby and I just need to get on with it. Thanks I will be checking my blood sugars, how does everyone carb count?

You can eat a burger, order a burger with loads of fillings, the burger pattie itself, plus extras such as bacon, cheese and salad, you just have to leave the bun behind. I’ve heard that a Burger King will do a bunless burger, served in a box. Ive never asked for one but there’s info on line about it here: https://www.verywell.com/how-to-eat-low-carb-at-burger-king-2241929

@ShyLily I don't want you to answer this in this thread, but have you chatted to a Dr or your health visitor about how you are feeling? I wonder if it's a touch of post natal depression? That can make everything seem like an effort, and depression can make controlling diabetes harder. When I had post natal depression I felt really alone especially when in a room full of people including my family!

@ShyLily I'm glad to hear that you're fine now. Good luck with sorting things out - you've come to the right place for advice and support. You can get on top of this, you did it when pregnant so you can do it again!

Hey, we all have highs and lows from time to time. Set yourself some easy goals to kick start you off. That way once you complete them, it's a small achievement and you'll feel better. Gradually keep chipping away at it.
Despite being T2 for 4 years now, metforminx2 in the morning with Sitagliptin and 2xmet at night with 1xsimvastin. I rattle like a pill box. I love food but stuck with small portions, only got to smell it and look at it and my levels raise. Lol
I'm 47, when visiting my parents my mum still tries to feed me all the wrong food. Sometimes it's not possible to keep to low carbs all the time, but again balance it with some sort of exercise to reduce the rise in blood sugar levels.
I carb up for energy, then go cycling with friends on the weekend for a couple of hours.
It is hard socialising with friends when dining out, their tucking into desserts and I can't eat them. I have an occasional spoonful and every now again, sometimes I fall of the wagon but not often. Hey were human.
I miss eating ice cream, lollipops in the summer and full fat coco cola.
Hang in there and stay positive, you can do this. Good luck.

Never be scared of taking medication, by all means read up and be prepared of possible side effects. But, until you take it, you won't know what it will do to you. It may work it, it may not. You don't know, everybody is different. Simvastin is for cholesterol, it cleans you arteries out, prevents them from clogging up. At the start, I was a ticking time bomb, my cholesterol was shockingly high, poor diet and a naughty lifestyle. It is worth taking, it maybe only a short term thing, my arteries are clean from change in diet, stop smoking and drink occasionally, so I take them now and again to keep a clean bill of health. Sitagliptin in the morning is one to control my high level insulin production, helps keep my levels more balanced throughout the day. Stops it from spiking when I eat.
Unfortunately I have come to the round to accept, my diabetes will be with me for life. Mine is unique to me and me only, it is in my genes. No matter how I tweak my diet, or exercise I still struggle to keep in range on my levels. I'm cool with that.
You have a fighting chance of changing your medication in the future.
Keep tweaking away at your diet, increase your exercise a little bit more. Finally get more control of it.
Life is a roller coaster, it is never smooth running, hold on tight and ride it out.
Just keep telling yourself 'you can do this'.
