What oils do you use for cooking and dressings. I know most agree olive oil is the best but there are differing opinions about other oils example I know a lot of you use coconut oil which I have been using lately but read on another thread it is not a good oil to use because it has to much omega 6 in it as some other oils do to so is it better to just to stick to olive oil ???

Coconut oil is not an omega 6 rich PUFA and can be used freely.

This was said on the Quick Eat Fat thread
Be careful with other oils than olive oil, coconut oil, avocado and nut oils as their omega 6 content is high and cause inflammation in the body (the main reason for CVD)

I'm pretty certain that means be careful with other oils apart from olive oil, coconut oil, avacado oil etc :)

Extra Virgin Olive Oil every-time, it's really cheap to buy in the likes of Lidl and Aldi.

I use extra virgin olive oil, and rice bran oil.

This was after consideration that coconut oil is saturated, non virgin olive oil has a higher smoke point, but only as it's a side effect of the chemicals used to extract the later pressings, and rice bran appeared to be a good all rounder, listed as also being a good source of vitamin E, and an antioxidant.

Having said that, I've used about an inch from the neck of the bottle in the last month or so!

Does anyone use walnut oil I have a bottle not used it yet as I am not sure if it is to cook with or just for making dressings

Yes perhaps I did misunderstand the thread especially as I have heard here and read on the net that coconut oil is a good one thats was why I bought some

There is an interesting article on the Tokelau diet here, (who the other article refers to as the shining examples for eating coconut fat)

http://thatpaleoguy.com/2011/09/01/coconut-and-starchy-vegetable-consumption-in-the-pacific-islands/

A lot of starchy food, no eggs, a lot of healthy fish, nothing like a western diet, and they are still prone to the same problems we have when they eat processed foods as well.
It can be problematic to pick and choose just the examples of others diets that we personally like the look of, so do it with care.

I pretty much exclusively use Olive oil or butter. Purely for taste reasons, I'm not too concerned about health :-/ I sometimes use rapeseed or lard if cooking to a very high temp eg: Yorkshire Puds!
