Daughters HA1bc gone up from 8 - 8.4.

Feel really fed up ( to put it the politest way possible) have workered really hard over last three months and had really felt things had improved, but obviously they haven't.

Any Ideas.

I couldn't agree more with what Eddie just said. You have had a real uphill fight to get this far and hopefully things will stabilise a bit now you have got rid of some of the hurdles the school was throwing in your direction. Remember we can bring someone up from a hypo very quickly, but it takes time to reduce BG to a controlled level.

Hi donnamum,

I read your recent post about your daughter maybe trying twice daily lantus. I think you may
be surprised with how much of an improvement this makes. I'd definitely say it's worth the
extra daily jab.

Keep up the good work.

All the best,
timo.

Hi,

We too have a constant struggle with both my girls' HbA1c's, so I relate to how fed up you're feeling :( .

Just a thought - do you know if your daughter goes high during the night? We didn't realise what a problem this was until my daughters went on continuous blood glucose monitoring devices over several days and nights. They both regularly went into the 20's in the early hours and then often dropped again by morning so we did not realise it was happening on a regular basis. It is v difficult to get good HbA1c's if this is happening, as no matter how hard you work at it during the day, the nights cancel out yr hard work.

If you don't have access to a continuous blood glucose monitor thru yr hospital, you could try doing some tests during the night over 2 or 3 nights yrself - exhausting I know, but it may give you some useful info that the consultant could use to adjust insulin doses.

To diabetesmum.

I think she must be high during the night, as she has such a large bowl of cereal before she goes off to bed. As her readings are great by the time she get up following morning. Will do night reading over next few nights.

To Timo2

Its not her lantus they want her to extra jab of its novarapid. They want her to have it after her supper at same time as Lantus, but i'm worried of nightime hypo.

If she was a smaller supper she wakes up to low.

So very confused why they want to increase injections. Maybe it is just to get HA1bc down.

Hi donnamum,

I think you're right to be worried about about using novorapid too close to bed time.
Splitting your daughters lantus dose will reduce any morning lows (so she won't need so
many supper time carbs)and stop any late afternoon/evening highs (no need for extra
novorapid).
Although a lot of people find splitting lantus 50/50 works very well, I'm not sure if its the kind
of thing that the specialists usually recommend for type 1s.

Regards,
timo.

NovoRapid has a fairly fast decay rate - that is to say it's about 90 minutes in and out of your system (on average). Lantus is a tricky dicky but I found it fairly stable with my NovoRapid.
