Hair loss a symptom?

Hello,

Since nov2008, i have been getting a few problems. The worst was a rash which my doctor hinted on psoriasis. My granny has psoriasis. I am waiting to see a dermatologist. A trigger for psoriasis can be a yeast infection. I am currently going through my 3rd yeast infection since then. Though the rash cleared up.

I have also been getting bald patches on my legs. I thought it was great - less shaving! But i still got my doctor to check it out and my thyroid blood result came back fine. I was told by my doctor it was something to do with the rash I have also been getting cold feet, sometimes. They were so cold once, they were numb, i couldn't hardly feel them. The internet mentioned diabetes, which is why im here.

I have also been losing energy. I dont have half as much as i used to. I am really feeling tired after 10 hours of sleep a night. I hate not having energy, i used to exercise in a gym 4 times a week and i dont have the energy to do anything anymore. I have been blaming the winter weather though! I passed out once back in feb. It was first thing in the morning before breakfast.
I have also been feeling thirsty alot and going to the loo alot.

But the past few days, i have had enough. I have a small bald patch in my eyebrow. Anywhere but my face and head. But it all started with small patches on my legs. I am going to the doctor first thing on monday and i am not going out the door until they do every type of test.

I have an identical twin sister. She is overweight (i am not). She to has bald pathches on her legs. Alot more than me. She is also very tired and sleeps more than me. She has also complained about blurry vision.

Can all this possibly be a sign of diabetes? And hair loss?

Thanks

Hi lisajane,
Seems as though you are having a rough time of it lately.
The symptoms you describe could be diabetes but no one can diagnose here. I am glad you are going to see your Doctor on Monday , he will be able to test for this. Make sure you list all the problems you are having.
With regard to the hair loss. This could also be diabetes related but there are other things that it could be.
Let us know how you get on,
Thinking of you,
Catherine.

Hi lisajane,

I'm no doctor, but what you are describing seem to fit with the sypmtoms of hypothyroidism (low thyroid function).

Around 10 days ago I was diagnosed with hypothyroid after a partial thyroidectomy in December. I did some research and couldn't believe the effects that a slow thyroid can have on one body! All the things you've described fit - even down to losing hair from the outer edge of the eyebrows! I haven't had cold hands or feet, but I really can't cope with the cold. My poor hubby has lost 6 stones in sweat, and I'm sat in front of the fire with a jumper on! I also have psoriasis and that has got worse, and I am so tired! How is your memory? My brain has turned to mush - brain fog - with a vengence! I can't think from minute to minute some days. Multifunctioning and logical thinking has gone through the window.

Take a look at this link http://www.ultrawellness.com/blog/hypothyroidism It might answer a lot of your questions, including the fact that hypothyroidism doesn't always show up by the normal blood test. Not ALL the symptoms apply to me, but I also read somewhere that another symptom is low body temperature (which, when I checked it, was low!).

I hope this gives you something to think about and a little more ammunition when you go back to the docs.

Best of luck

Thanx for that website about hypothyroidism. I have had some of the symptoms including being very cold and the swollen eyelids. My doctor treated me for some eye infection. Im thinking it could be an allergy. But i really dont know. I hate self diagnosing but my doctor is useless. At this stage, i dont know anymore. Whatever i read, i think i have it all. So i just want to keep away from all info and stop myself worrying. But the doctors i have seen are clueless. I seem to be the 1 asking them to test me for this or that.

My doc is exactly the same. When I go to him with a problem, he says "Do you want to see a Specialist?". Helloooo! You're the doctor! Do I NEED to see a specialist?!?!? I've had to badger him to do anything. For 10 years he's been saying "your thyroid reading is borderline, but not enough to do anything about it". The nurse said I needed Thyroxine, but he said no. It was only when it became enlarged and showed up on a chest xray (which I had to ask him for!) that anything got done about it. Even then he said that nothing needed doing about it, but when I was persistently having trouble breathing and I said I wanted to see a specialist, they found out that it was blocking my air intake by 50% and did a partial thyroidectomy!

I hope you get it sorted soon. Best of luck.

See if you can get a better doctor, and see if you can get the *actual* numbers from your thyroid test, many doctors have a very loose definition of "normal". Your symptoms could be caused by a number of things, any endocrine malfunction (like hypothyroid or diabetes) may have knock on effects to other systems and once you get it fixed a whole lot of things you hadn't realised were connected may improve.

IMO you need a much better workup.
