Hi l am 59 year old woman and for more than a year now my hair has been thinning and shedding. I'm just wondering if anybody knows could this have anything to do with my blood sugar which have been up and down recently or could it be menopausal. Its really getting me down. I am type 1 diabetic . Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you everybody.

Hi there... I am not sure if it has anything to do with diabetes but I can tell you that around your age I started to get hair thinning too. I went through the menopause from hell and lost huge amounts of hair. If it's any consolation it does slow down. I was curious about wether diabetes does cause hair thinning after you asked the question and according to google it apparently can cause thinning and good control of blood sugars is recommended. Try not to stress and worry about it...it's easy to say I know but having been there I can say from my own experience that it should get better for you. Chin up ...hugs

Just wondering if you'd had your thyroid function tested recently, as underactive thyroid caused my hair to thin tremendously. Since starting thyroxine, it's slowly getting better. If you haven't already, I'd try to get a drs appointment to discuss it.

Could well be hormonal... After a load of stress and meno kicking in, I lost hair, and what i had was brittle and thin. Biotin supplements, vitamin d loading and using a keratine shampoo helped some, thankfully. Just threw everything at it I could think of. That said, @Hopeful34 makes a good point about possible thyroid issues. Worth getting checked. We can dismiss a whole lot, not wanting to be a bother or anything, but sometimes it's worth getting a little bloodwork done to be on the safe side.

I used to have so much hair I couldn’t get a comb through it and had to always use a brush. It started getting thinner in my 50s and then really thin in my 60 especially at my temples. I heard by increasing protein it would help. So I don’t know if it was that or now I’m out the other side of menopause but it has thickened up a little so I don’t think I’m going to go bald anymore! There are calculators on t’internet so you can work out how much protein you should consume.

I lost much of my hair due to the menopause (another one from hell) plus a long spell of intense stress. Recently I started some high-grade supplements without additives/preservatives, and to my amazement am noticing a very slight but definite improvement. Too soon to be ecstatic! but I have my eyebrows back too. I had a thyroid test long ago as I had my suspicions of underactive, but although the private test showed underactive the NHS test which was not anything like as comprehensive, showed "normal" and I didn't have the money to pursue the private option. If you can afford a private test, go for that, but IME the NHS test is a waste of time.

Supplements include magnesium and collagen. I suspect I'm not allowed to name the company here, but there are several that specify no fillers or additives.

I too experienced this with menopause, I don’t think it was down to my diabetes because my hair didn’t change in the first 6 years of my T2 until I hit the menopause, I now take collagen, biotin, B12, & folic acid (you need folic acid for the biotin & collagen to work) and my hair has thickened a bit and I have baby hairs around my temple. Don’t expect results over night, it takes about 4-6 months to see changes but I’m 2 years in and I have really good results now.

I always had very fine hair but lots of it, haven’t got as much as I used to have but it’s definitely improved
