Hi all

Havent posted for ages but still avidly read everyone elses!

I have been low carbing for 18months now with all the usual excellent results. reduced weight, insulin doseage, much more stable bg readings.

I have just had my hospital review and I was keen to discuss how I can refine my insulin dose as I currently use half dose pens but still cant fine tune enough as only take 1 unit at breakfast, 1 at lunch and 2 for my eve meal. I was really disappointed to be told that basically I need to relax my control, and that it's fine to run my bg's into 10 or 12 after meals

To be fair, the consultant said he would look into my suggestion of diluting the insulin to give me more leeway but to be honest I'm not holding my breath.

I was very pleased with my test results, as they were - which is why I dont understand their saying to loosen control.

Feeling a wee bit frustrated at the mo. :|

I would not listen to their advice and continue what you are doing now, 5.7 is a fantastic result. Keep it up.

Thanks for the encouragement Nigel,

Guess I just feel a bit let down, very proactive in my diabetes management and have been able to do so much more in my life since gaining control, climbed mt Snowdon at the beginning of the month and feel very proud of myself, bg's in the 5 - 6 range all the way up!

Was hoping for help in tightening control not to be told the opposite. :?

Had my check-up at hospital yesterday. HBA1C was 5.4. Can't believe the difference between consultants. This one was absolutely delighted at my control and told me I should be very proud of myself. Chol was 5.4 HDL 2.11 and trigs 0.76. She kept looking at the results and shaking her head with a smile. Told me the results were fantastic and couldn't believe I hadn't had a hypo since Oct last year. Diabetes is a personal thing and how you choose to control it is very much your business. Last consultant I saw wasn't please by me waking in the low 4's :( . Go figure!!!

chol was 4.5 not 5.4

Very true that its a personal thing, but I do think that I should be encouraged to keep good control and I had hoped that they may have some ideas and different tools that could be made readily available for those that wish to look after themselves.

Incidently I was seated nxt to a woman who had one leg amputated and had a couple of toes removed on the other foot, thats enough for me to carry on with the tight control!

soaps on telly and people talking about the characters as if they were real.
I conclude some of them don't like the control being taken away from them. My Semi retired Angel DSN was as delighted with my 5.4% as I was. she spent several minutes congratulating me on that and how far I've come since my stroke.
She thinks more of her patients' welfare than her status. No wonder I call her my angel.
5.7% is MUCH better than their paltrey 7% target.
Don't let them get to you. YOU are in charge of your own health.

Just got back from doc's. Asked me how long I intended to continue testing so much? (From 2 to 6 times per day - usually 4). Refused to change my insulin as my HbA1c was too low at 5.1 - NHS target apparently 6.5. (I asked why I shouldn't have a non diabetic reading target - only reply was that hypo's are more problems than high readings - I pointed out that I have only ever had 2 readings under 4 and both those during exercise). I pointed out it was my understanding and use of insulin and diet that have brought about low HbA1c but said he could only refer me to diabetic specialist nurse re insulin so will write next week. They seem far more interested in people who don't give a ****. Cholesterol still a problem @ 5.2 HDL 1.5 LDL 2.3 TRIGS 2.98.

Great results from all of you guys... keep it up and I'll be joining you on my next HBA1C, and we'll be the ones around to tell the tale in the future :D

my experience has been similiar.

my last hbA1c before my DAFNE course was 5.9%, but with a lot of hypos. Did DAFNE, that was very helpful in that it has shown me that I was using too much insulin which was why I was hypoing all the time and feeling like my blood sugar was crashing all day long.

But it also showed me that a high carb diet will not work when using insulin as you spike massively between meals! I started feeling v lethargic 2 hours after eating on my usual diet and DAFNE regime and when I tested I found I was going up to 12, 13, 14 sometimes!!! Only if I can eat lower carb can I get the post-prandial reading down.

Pointed this out at recent DAFNE review to DSN and dietitian who I have to say are both lovely and as helpful as you possibly could ask for - but they told me it was fine to be going to those levels after eating "as long as it comes back down again before the next meal" and said I should "enjoy my carbs". also said that the reason I was feeling lethargic when going high after meals was because I had been running so tight and I would "get used to it"???!!! makes no sense at all to me and I can't accept that.

and as I said these people are extremely supportive and I usually have nothing but praise for them :?

I can't see any other way than lower carb at the moment although my tastebuds would prefer higher carb

Curlyheadfreak, I don't think this advice will make sense to anyone!
