Hi, I have just (this week) found out i am pregnant (5 weeks), and my diabetes specialist nurse told me to start having a snack before bed. I used to do this when i was first diagnosed but this is about 10 years ago so can't remember much. Could you tell me do i need to take some insulin with this snack. I am on an insulin pump as i am allergic to insulin and have insulin resistance, so i do get some insulin during the night anyway, but ? enough to cover a snack. I have started to have a banana, or other piece of fruit just before bed.

Please let me know what you do?

Hi
Wouldnt like to give you advice , esp if you are pregant (congratulations !) but I would ask your Nurse why she thinks you should snack at night especially if you are used to being stable overnight, and pumps are about as precise as you can get I believe, without a change of pancreas

Maybe she thinks that due to hormone fluctuations you may start to experience more hypos (in first trimester think insulin requirements drop?) but if thats the case you will need to adjust your regime overall, not just stay as you are and then snack on the off chance. For now, I would maybe do as advised until you find out her rationale and you will be able to assess for yourself fairly quickly if this is having a negative impact on bg. In terms of snacks, this will also depend on how much you would drop -ie a digestive biscuit might be ok but a banana too much., As I say, I would check why after ten years she has given you this advice

Then, over time you will need to adjust (as we all do) as your pregnancy changes
