Hi Marie
There are two types of measurements for HbA1c. Old timers like me use the % figures but doctors have started using a different set of units called IFCC and yours is in this. Your 44 is equivalent to 6.2% which is fairly good for a HbA1c.
The readings that you get on a meter are different units again and should be between 4 - 7 mmol before meals and no more than 8.5 two hours after meals if possible.
In a lot of people, stress makes their blood sugar higher, but it is not unknown for it to lower levels.
In my opinion, it would be a good idea to visit your GP, it may not be just the diabetes that is lowering your levels, but I'm not a doctor and can't diagnose anything.
